Only the rich had single beds and when you traveled you often shared beds with strangers.

Hence the saying “POLITICS MAKES STRANG BED FELLOWS “! Hotels were expensive and poorly heated. The BIG problem with gays is that EVERY THING IS SEXUAL. Oh they were in the same bed they must of had sex. Went to a Christian sharing group one time. Every one of them talked about when they knew they were gay. Jesus was a side note, some how it was all about them..
