On the night it happened, a man whose first name was the name of Reid's brother, went to a meeting of an AA group that was in progress. He was a regular at those meetings. When he came in that night, he had blood on his clothes and said he had just had a fight with a family member and was afraid the Secret Service would come after him. The group laughed at what he said. thinking he was making a joke about the Secret Service. He said he was drunk when it happened and passed out but woke while he was struggling on the ground with the family member.
This guy was also wanted by police (before or after this incident) for resisting a cop (think that was it) and he was arrested and his picture put in the paper, saying he was the brother of Reid. The man reporting this incident, called another person who was at the AA meeting and asked him if this was the same man at AA. This person said it was the same man - so they both agreed this man was Reid's brother.
So, it's likely Reid's brother was the reason Reid had that serious wound to his eye area. It's difficult to think a fall from an exercise machine could deliver a punch hard enough to almost cost Reid his eye. He had to have surgery on that eye in order to save it.
