I would have thought these parents had learned something from the episode in December but I guess they are slow learners. IMO they simply do not want to be bothered supervising any of their kid’s activities so therefore, try to justify letting them play in parks unsupervised.

“Child Protective Services has succeeded in making me terrified of letting my children out,” she said. “Nothing that has happened so far has convinced me that children don’t need independence and freedom, except that they’ll be harassed by police and CPS.”

I guess the mother at least is content to wait until SOMETHING DOES HAPPEN before she can be bothered to pay attention. Great lesson she’s teaching her kids. Looks like the father doesn’t have much say in anything!

FREE RANGE PARENTS

At what age can parents move about freely without causing controversy?

The gov. employees should do time for kidnapping.

It seems to me that the reasonableness of this event depends entirely on the neighborhood. If it is indeed a generally safe low crime area, then at 10 and 6, a mile from home should be no big deal.

I think the problem is meddlesome neighbors and officious cops who, having been called, don't have the simple commonsense to pick up the kids and take them home instead of subjecting them to the tender mercies of county social workers.

911: 911 Operator, what is your emergency
Caller: OMG, there's two kids walking down the sidewalk!

911: OMG!
Caller: OMG!

CPS: Child protective services, may I help you?
911: OMG! There's two kids walking down the sidewalk, alone
CPS: OMG!

This family is being harassed.

In the same state, living in a far less ritzy area, my son and his friends went all over the neighborhood and I never saw him until dinner time. I’m pretty sure that was happening as soon as he learned how to open the front door and get out.

Did I freak? No. Did the neighbors freak? No.

He was raised “free range” just like I and everyone I know was.

What is with this attitude that you have to watch kids 24 hours per day? What happens to kids when they are constantly watched? They’ll grow up unable to leave their parents’ sides, because they’ll be too afraid!

Notice how the press is playing them up as FREE RANGE PARENTS .... like they're neglecting their kids instead of treating like we were all raised.

Nothing like objective journalism.

It takes a village ....

To discipline parents who refuse to submit. Fortunately, CPS and Police thugs have unlimited power to enforce their whims with violence and oppression.

The "concerned citizen" needs to be legally challenged. People have different ways of raising children and it is none of anyone elses business. when the street lights came on it was be in the house time.

Summer vacations and other non-school periods were a lot more loose and I remember a BUNCH of things that shouldn't have happened (no one got killed)

I realize that the do-gooders in this story are sincerely interested in the welfare of the kids, but unless physical child abuse is involved.....calm down.

When I was in 4-5th grade, living in Milwaukee, my parents had NO IDEA of where I was when I was out "playing"...sometimes, I know, they would not have approved, but the vast majority of times, we were in the neighborhood, under the supervision of another kid's mother, and just playing.

Apparently the school district there will provide bussing to school if the children live more that a mile from the school, otherwise they have to walk.

So they can walk alone to school at age 5 or 6, but not that age with an older sibling going home from a park.

Someone give these poor folks a job outside of the People’s Republic of Maryland, please. Help them escape the nanny state ghetto.

Barring that, they should move an hour and a half west. I spent a few formative years in the mountains of Allegheny Co. MD. My parents had no idea what mountain top we were on or what valley we were skulking through.
