Cop charged with murder of motorist after jarring video surfaces
CHARLESTON, S.C. — A white South Carolina police officer has been charged with murder in the shooting death of a black motorist after a traffic stop. North Charleston Mayor Keith Summey told a hastily called news conference that city Patrolman Michael Thomas Slager was arrested and charged Tuesday after law enforcement officials saw a video of the shooting following a Saturday traffic stop. Authorities say the victim, 50-year-old Walter Lamer Scott of Charleston, was shot after the officer already hit him with a stun gun.

Firing from a Weaver stance at a fleeing citizen at that distance will be difficult to defend.

Makes no difference — any attack that was taking place was broken off when the suspect fled away from the cop, unarmed. The cop drew his pistol, took a good second or so to aim at the fleeing man, now a good 5 to 10 yards away and getting further, and fired 8 shots into the man’s back.
Now, I don’t know if the cop’s dirty or just momentarily lost control of his emotions and fired in anger, but no way was that in self defense of himself. Nor was there anyone else the suspect was endangering when he was shot in the back. The cop was wrong and he *proved* he was wrong when he tried to plant the taser closer. Period. The end. Stick a fork in him - he’s done.
Who cares what went on before the murderous thug shot someone, running away, in the back?

Yes, I’m not familiar with how much a cop has to feel his life is in danger but that really does seem like a short distance to not try to run the person down, rather than shooting.

A very simple way to prevent future abuses would be for cops to wear body cameras.
And then we have to buy FR-sized servers to archive all that footage from every cop cam into perpetuity. That’s going to be expensive.
And the person does speak with a typical black American’s dialect if that’s the other thing you’re worried about. But some white southerners sound the same way, so it’s hard to tell.
What a ridiculous comment! Digital storage is cheap. It’s certainly a lot cheaper than paying millions in lawsuit settlements. Even if it was expensive, isn’t it worth it to save the lives of innocents and get bad cops off the street?

I was just channel-surfing and CNN just showed, with enhanced clean-up and close-up video, the cop picking up his taser and droping it by the guy’s body. This happens right when the tree is between the photographer and the cop but the cop’s hand comes into view and you see the taser being pitched to the ground.
From then on, just about any other video that’s shown will be edited to just show the beatdown and never what preceded it.

Yes the video makes it look bad; but there have been too many cases of partial information coming out making something look a certain way.
