The City of Kitchener has closed part of Stauffer Drive so that a colony of salamanders can cross safely from one side of the street to the other.
Jefferson salamanders, which live in the forests on either side of the road, are protected under Ontario's Endangered Species Act because their populations are in decline across the province.
In Kitchener, the salamanders that live in the Doon South area face one particular threat: traffic.

Spring peepers will be coming out soon. We have a lot of storm water rentention ponds around here with cattails and such.Gets a mite loud when the chorus starts singing together. Hard to nelieve these tiny thumbnail size frogs can make such a loud noise.
This site has audio files of solo and chorus.

To think our kitties have brought 3 ugly little salamanders in to play with and eventually eat over the weekend. Also, 5 snakes and one lizard.

In Canada, and I think in Norway/Sweden they build *crossings* for the critters.
Animal migrations are fascinating. Fortunately, many migrations take place away from roadways. [Beluga, Canada]

I love those little guys!
When I was very young and didn’t know that I should only move them to where they were headed, I used to bag up *everything* crossing on the mountain and bring it home.
It drove my dad nuts.
All the peeping, chirping, croaking and ribbeting was *deafening* when you walked outside at night.
I loved it.

I fed my big female Spotted nightcrawlers.
The two males who were in the vivarium with her hid when she was hungry.
She would see me going to the fridge to get her supper and run back and forth *barking*.
I kid you not.
The much smaller males hid in their cave until she was done and sleeping, before they’d venture out.
I miss Big Mama.

Soorry if you are offended Personally, I would have thought it would be better to be less slimy than a politician than more so. After all, I believe that prostitution is the SECOND oldest profession after politics and there can be nothing more slimy than some pols!

My line was *look what followed me home mom*.....nothing was safe from me thinking I was doing the critter a *favor* .... all that ended when I about 8 y/o and found a tiny Eastern cottontail in the tall grass ..... I thought I could raise it for a *pet* .....it only lived 24 hours. I learned my lesson. ;(
