GLENDALE, Ariz. -- Major League Baseball commissioner Rob Manfred says he has received a formal request from Pete Rose asking that his lifetime ban be lifted and that he will consider the all-time hits leader's request "on its merits."
"I want to make sure I understand all of the details of the Dowd Report and Commissioner [Bart] Giamatti's decision and the agreement that was ultimately reached," Manfred said after a meeting with Los Angeles Dodgers players in Arizona on Monday morning. "I want to hear what Pete has to say, and I'll make a decision once I've done that."
Rose's previous efforts to gain leniency from commissioners Fay Vincent and Bud Selig were never considered.
Rose, 73, played from 1963 to 1986, amassing 4,256 hits, still a major league record. Three years after he retired, Rose agreed to a permanent ban from baseball amid accusations he gambled on games while playing and managing for the Cincinnati Reds.

Not a Reds fan. They beat the Yanks in 76...no destroyed them...and I’m a huge Yankees fan. BUT. The Reds deserved it. What a great team the Big Red Machine was back in the day. And Pete Rose was friggin fantastic....Charlie Hustle.....never be another like him.
As I remember it, it is a lifetime ban. If a truly permanent ban, then no, he should not ever be in the Hall.
Also, the first sentence refers to it as a lifetime ban.

Unless Pete’s got one foot on a banana peel and the other in a grave, let him stay banned.
If he’s going to die in a few days, then consider lifting the ban, have the Hall of Fame ballots at the ready, do the induction and at least let him expire with pride.
But for now, he needs to face the consequences of some very bad choices.

The rule is Bull Crap especially since he wasn’t accused of gambling while he played.....he earned his HOF during his playing career.
Mickey Mantle was banned from baseball during a period that he was a greeter at Atlantic city. George Steinbrenner had dealings with gamblers and was banned for a few years.
Rose’s accomplishments had nothing to do with gambling.....ban him from the Hall as a manager....but not as a players

The rule applied to managers, too. A lifetime ban from baseball is pretty specific, doesn’t warn just the players.
The citation at my previous post certainly opens the door, didn’t know that before.
I’m figuring if they let Pete Rose in, they have to let Shoeless Joe in, and all the ‘Roiders, too.
But I don’t believe Rose deserves it. He knew the rule and admitted everything in the Dowd Report to be true.

EVERY NIGHT. Are you kidding me. You think that’s alright. So you believe the rules should not apply to everyone. The best players, the superstars do not have to obey those silly rules like gambling on games. Only the journey men stiffs have to respect the rules.
When the Scum bag White Sox (Oh BTW I’m a Cubs fan) threw the 1919 World Series they destroyed baseballs credibility for years. The then Commissioner of Baseball Judge Mountain Landis banned almost every Sox player in that series. Shoeless Joe Jackson was banned for life. Even though Jackson refused to take any money and had an outstanding series himself. He knew about it and said nothing. He is still banned from baseball.
I don’t know if he should go into the Hall posthumously, but he shouldn’t go in while he’s still breathing. I don’t want to see him capitalize from this honor.
Actually, that is a good way to put it. It is a honor to be in the Hall, and he dishonored the game by violating one of the rules posted in every club house.
Yes, other people have dishonored the game, and some may be in the Hall. But bad behavior of others is not a viable defense. He knew what he did, and accepted the sentence. By his admission, he dishonored the game, and made himself unworthy of its highest honor.
I guess why I get so riled up about this is that he belonged to one of the best teams in baseball when I was a kid. But now, instead of talking about how great the combined talent on the Big Red Machine was, it is “Pete Rose” this, and “Pete Rose” that. He may have been Charlie Hustle, but it was for his own benefit, and not in the spirit of team. I may be old-fashioned in my belief, but his attitude that he is bigger than the game rankles me.
Also, I still believe that he is not contrite, he is just sorry that he was caught.
Well, I have wasted enough of the forum’s and my time with this rant, but that’s what I think about the subject. YMMV.
