Here’s a simple explanation
Red Guards were young people, who, being simple-minded communist zealots, marched, chanted slogans, and with political direction from the top (Mao Tse Dong), attacked his political enemies as directed. Mao used them to create total chaos in society to further his far-left goals. Much like the early Nazis, these were people were swept up in the political movement with a religious fervor to “promote the revolution” and support Chairman Mao.
