The man who invented the K-Cup coffee pod almost 20 years ago says he regrets doing so, and he can't understand the popularity of the products that critics decry as an environmental catastrophe.
John Sylvan worked at Keurig in the 1990s when he devised a simple product that could create a small mug of coffee out of a plastic pod. Originally aiming it at office workers, Sylvan said he thought the product might have some limited appeal to people who would normally go Starbucks, Dunkin Donuts or other coffee chains in the morning, because now they could get a cup of coffee at work that was cheaper, faster, and no fuss.
"That would make it environmentally neutral, because you wouldn't have those Starbucks cups [everywhere]," Sylvan told the CBC's As It Happens in an interview. "The first market was the office coffee service market," he said, adding he is "absolutely mystified" by his product's popularity in homes.

Maybe I’m just an OPTIMIST, but for some reason I think that the Earth will survive this BRUTAL ASSAULT from K-Cups.
“Actually, the guy Id like to get tarred and feathered is whoever invented bottled water. What a scam. Especially since I am the sucker who has to carry the stuff home when my wife wants it from Costco. Its gonna throw my back out one of these days.”
I think you maen whoever decided to market bottled water. As per wiki, bottled water has been around since the dawn of civilization.
As per wiki: The first commercially distributed water in America was bottled and sold by Jacksons Spa in Boston in 1767
More specifically, you might be mad at the entity that made it chic again leading to the modern day prolifertion of bottled water.
In 1977, Perrier launched a successful advertisement campaign in the United States, heralding a rebirth in popularity for bottled water.
As long as you are drinking Poland Spring Water from Poland, Maine, drink all you want and help our Maine economy. FYI, it really does come from springs still, just not all in Poland, Maine.
I can’t stand the taste of the Keurig coffees. The “best” of them are tolerable for a first cup when nothing else is available, but no way I could use one in my home.
My husband and I have had Reverse Osmosis water for years. We even have a TDS meter to test the quality of the water. There is a huge difference in RO quality as opposed to our tap water.
Of course the best is distilled, but RO works great and makes better coffee. I use it in all my cooking.
The water is great, not so sure about my cooking. LOL
Yes, he really did also invent wider rolling papers. Saw a documentary on him made right after k-cups went big. They mentioned his first invention
dear 5th,
Your last statement, buttressed by my experiments in keeping brewed coffee in mason jars in the fridge, long before this keurig thing, and coming to the same conclusion, is why i use the plastic cone and paper.
