A single mother living in Silicon Valley has told how she's been forced to move into a single garage measuring around 250-square-feet as rent continues to skyrocket. Nicole Jones now pays $1,000 per month - around one-fourth of the average San Francisco rent - to live in the tiny space with her 18-month-old daughter and she also has a son on the way. The converted home in suburban San Mateo includes a central space which is utilized as a living room, kitchen, bedroom and dining room. In the back, there is a toilet and stand-up shower. 'There's no playing sports or little soccer games down the hallway, because this is it. What you see is what you get,' Jones half-jokingly told CNN.

In DFW she could live in the city for that amount, give or take. Hasn’t she heard about this “tiny house” trend? She’s on the leading edge...
Hmmmph! What’s the problem? No section 8 housing and free stuff in silicon valley?
Twice.
I’m going to bet that she gets evicted because the owners probably didn’t get a permit to convert the garage to a living quarters and the house is not zoned for multi family use.
The city will now send out an inspector, fine the homeowner, demand that they return the garage to its original condition and evict the tenant.
Here in Denver, $1,000 would get you a decent mobile home or a 1 bedroom apartment in a decent area.
I agree. No one is forcing this woman into anything. She has made all her choices and is living with the results of those choices.
Call the WAAAAAAAHBULANCE!
Those of us who home brew beer know that the alcohol volume tops out at 5-7% because at that point the level of alcohol starts getting high enough to kill off the yeast that are producing it.
In the same way this rent market will kill itself off when the majority who can no longer afford it get together and vote in rent control.
Nooooooo! Don’t give her any ideas to move to Texas!
She isn’t reading this.
Correct. Life is a series of choices. Choose the right or live with uncertainty, pain, and concern. Some learn that early, some never.
All of SF Bay Area from South San Jose to up beyond Marin Co is up in the 2-3k/month right now for 1Br.
Mountain View and Sunnyvale used to be affordable until Google.
Maybe she's not "qualified", no protective coloration or something.

As one that home brewed in the past in England (they tax you out the ass and more on alcohol you buy in the store or pub) I find your analogy quaint but 100% accurate. The law of supply and demand works and is real.
I now live in the USA and we can get decent beer (it was impossible 25 years ago) at a reasonable price I no longer home brew. However, I have been thinking about doing it again. It is nice to make your own and drink it. The best compliment I ever had in my life was from an Englishman drinking my beer made by this American, he said, "Not a bad pint." That is as good as it gets!!!!!
I forgot to add that rent control distorts the market relative to supply and demand. It makes the dwelling that are not rent controlled higher than the market should bear. It makes the dwellings that are rent controlled subsidized by those that are not rent controlled. If you do not understand this all you need to understand is who in the hell is paying the taxes and who the hell is paying the rent that is much higher than should be in an unregulated market. If you do not understand what I just said, move to Cuba and you will understand very quickly. Please do not come back.

No doubt. She’s too busy procreating.
Maybe California should go for that $50/hr minimum wage?
So? My folks often rented a garage converted into an apartment when we were young. Worst place we ever stayed was in a cleaned up chicken house, till we found a place to rent.
Life’s tough. Get used to it! Be thankful you have a roof!
Maybe if she kept her button-hole closed a bit more, she’d have more living options.
As it is, she has decked it out VERY NICELY, much better than my garage.
