The researchers used a number of techniques that are used when modeling real diseases, and the abstract ends with this dismal line: "We build up to a full scale simulation of an outbreak in the United States, and discover that for 'realistic' parameters, we are largely doomed." But Phys.Org relays a glimmer of hope by way of Alex Alemi, a grad student involved in the research: He says those who want to remain safe from the undead for as long as they can should head to the northern Rockies.
He explains that while books and movies typically show an outbreak touching all corners of the country immediately, "in our attempt to model zombies somewhat realistically, it doesn't seem like this is how it would actually go down." Yes, major cities could be toast within days, but less populated areas could be unaffected for weeks, and the northern Mountain Time Zone could be safe for months.

And how much did THIS cost taxpayers???
Exactly what I wondered!
That's why I smile when people talk about making their own little hideout, like technology somehow changes the lessons of human history.
What would actually happen, in short order, is what happened in the past - the establishment of fort-towns, based (in all probability) on shared religious or philosophical principles, and run by families and blood relations. And while I'm sure there'd be a lot of bible thumping, I'm also sure there would be a lot of predation of "others," just like in the past.
Past, hell. Just like now, everywhere. People take the tiny bit of civility in the world far too casually. Each tiny mark of respect people show each other was reached through the blood of many in the past - and can be lost again, far too easily, if people don't treat it as the precious treasure it actually is.
Yup. When the store shelves go bare the civility will be gone.
Probably funded by your tax dollars and mine.....
So a fortified houseboat might be a good idea? Where can I get one of those depth charge launchers. LoL
Very true.
I think they offer (besides Sour Diesel) a chainsawflamethrowershotgun and ammo. You'll be safe from Zombies and Samsquanches.
You might freeze to death but no brain eating involved.
Where is that?
The book “World War Z” actually has a good chapter on this. A rich guy sets up a fortified house, it was already really secure, invites his friends and staff, expects to wait out the end of the world.
He would have, if he hadn’t been televising his behavior and his friends tweeting / reporting their reactions.
No opsec, so the barriers come crashing down as people with ladders and tools and families come pouring in out of the hope of safety.
I’m uncertain how locked into the laws of physics Zombies are, but I’ve always thought the best strategy would be to head toward any sufficiently elevated area. My reasoning is that zombies would follow the path of least resistance, and since it takes more effort to climb than descend, eventually most zombies would wind up in the lowlands. That’s assuming, of course, that it requires any energy at all for zombies to move.
Any place there aren’t any liberals/Democrats.
The places growing to support the Bakken Oil Fields could be a great place to stay. Oil / coal to keep warm and build flame throwers, fuel civilization itself.
Beaver Island in Lake Michigan. In fact there are a lot of large Islands in the northern end of Lakes Michigan and Huron.
There’s a cracked.com article on the best weapon against zombies being a light saber. With it, you never run out of bullets, never needs sharpening, cauterizes what you kill to minimize mess, can use it to cut off infected limbs without people bleeding to death.
We joke around about zombies but we all know they’re really talking about the starving masses people when the worlds economy crashes or post nuclear apocalypse.
I remember reading an old comic book from the 1940s in which a man is chased by zombies into the ocean because zombies can’t tolerate salt water.
They get him anyway because, at the mouth of the Amazon, where this story takes place, the fresh water displaces the salt water far out to sea so the zombies walk out in the fresh Amazon water and get him.
Reminds me of an old TWILIGHT ZONE episode about a fallout shelter.
In the movie DEEP IMPACT, the government designates certain people to be saved in underground shelters. Outside many people are rattling the fence because they are excluded.
Ever wonder what would have happened in the REAL WORLD, with all those Bible and gun toting people left out?
