The lyrics of "Bad Moon Rising" were spot on for America.
I see a bad moon rising. I see trouble on the way. I see earthquakes and lightnin'. I see bad times today.
Don't go around tonight, Well it's bound to take your life, There's a bad moon on the rise.
I hear hurricanes a blowing. I know the end is coming soon. I fear rivers over flowing. I hear the voice of rage and ruin.
Well don't go around tonight, Well it's bound to take your life, There's a bad moon on the rise.
Hope you got your things together. Hope you are quite prepared to die. Looks like we're in for nasty weather. One eye is taken for an eye.
Well don't go around tonight, Well it's bound to take your life, There's a bad moon on the rise.
Don't come around tonight, Well it's bound to take your life, There's a bad moon on the rise.
“That is my second favorite mondegren, the first being: ‘Excuse me, while I kiss this guy’ - Jimi Hendrix”
That one is so popular there is an entire website dedicated to misheard lyrics called:
“Pinko Jet Airliner, don’t carry me too far away...”
Yup, that was my point.
I think Mcguire like so many others was just into the beatnik nihilism of the times. It was cool to be pessimistic back then, and if you were an optimist you were considered a fool and worthy of scorn.
But, then they said He was an eternal spirit.
Holy Conundrum.
And of course, Joe Coker’s misheard lyrics:

Just quoted McLuhan on another thread! Funny.
“Pinko Jet Airliner, don’t carry me too far away...”
Nah, I always heard that one fine.
Yeah I always thought it was “you, and me, and Leslie” too. Figured the song was just a clever ploy to talk his girlfriend into a menage a trois.
One of my favorites isn’t exactly a mondegreen, but it is my belief that the impetus for Ray Stevens’ “Guitarzan” came from the earlier song “Popsicles, Icicles” where she sings...
Bright stars and guitars and
Drive-ins on Friday night
Hendrix deliberately used “kiss the guy” during live performances. The audience pretty much demanded it.
I’ve seen Fogerty do the same thing with the “bathroom on the right” lyric.
It’s waning too.
“Five Year Plans and New Deals, wrapped in golden chains
And I wonder, still I wonder, who’ll stop the rain”
"Count the head lice on the highway!"
