SOUTH PORTLAND, Maine A beloved K9 suffering from seizures and arthritis received a final salute and a police escort, with lights flashing, to the Maine vet clinic where he was euthanized.
Dozens of officers and firefighters turned out this month to pay their respects to Sultan, a 13-year-old German shepherd who sniffed out drugs and bad guys with the Yarmouth Police Department.
Officers gave a last pat or scratch to the dog. Then they provided an escort for Sultan's final trip to a veterinary clinic.

Nice...
Innocent victims of 'no knock swat raids' have a differing opinion.
One source was an article in the Chicago Times...there are others if you search them out. Victims of 'no knock swat raids' also know that the dogs are wrong more often than right.
Two day ago I had to put down my beloved cat Scooter. Fourteen years ago he showed up as a stray at our back door. He was just a little ball of fur. But he was my buddy and he was the best darn mouser I ever saw. It’s semi-rural where we live and one bitter cold winter he got five mice over a period of a few weeks. I don’t know how the darn things got in here but Scooter got them. He was a beautiful cat. Built like a leopard with a thick chest and powerful front legs. He was gray/black and white with stripes and a beautiful white chest. In the last three years however he developed feline diabetes. We treated him with insulin but in the last year he became sickly, often he would be calm and the next minute strangely aggressive. His eye sight was failing and after consulting with our veterinarian we had to make the painful decision to put him to sleep. It’s been only two days and I miss him so much already. We really do become attached to our pets, there’s no denying it.
Beautiful story. Thanks for sharing and I hope you can get over the loss of your Buddy. But never forget him.
FYI...If a mouse can get his face in an opening, he can get his whole body through!
You aren't kidding...double hankie.
You were lucky to have Scooter and he was lucky to have you. It’s never easy, but they trust you to do what is right.
Rest in peace, loyal friend.
I’m so sorry.
“Dozens of officers and firefighters turned out this month to pay their respects “
Too bad for the dog, but....
Darn right it’s a hankie alert. After actual workers/taxpayers get finished paying the bill for overtime for our firefighters and policemen.
It seems that even a dog affiliated with government gets a more elaborate send off than a regular schmoe taxpayer.
Unacceptable.
“Sultan earned it.”
He’s a dog. He doesn’t need a motorcade to be euthanized, overtime paid for by the taxpayer.
When you’re ready, consider my tagline...or a decent no-kill shelter.
Sorry for the loss of yoru beloved pet, but I have to ask - did Scooter get a motorcade of taxpayer police/firemen to his final visit the vet? If not, why not?
I would have hated to be the veterinarian that was given that duty.
I had a tiny 3-lb. Chihuahua I “inherited” when my dad passed away. She was with me for six years until she was 14 years old and passed away from congestive heart failure. She has clusters of seizures for unknown reasons. She might not have them for months, then had them regularly for three weeks. She was so sick at the end that I knew I had to make “the decision”, but she left on her own. Now I still have two aging cockers and hope I’m never faced with that. I commend you for seeing your girl to the end.
Thank you for your kind words.
Cold laser therapy works wonders on arthritis and nerve pain, and there are really good things to use for nerve problems like vitamin b12, among others.
