Today’s pot is far more potent than the pot available back in the 70s, and by a factor of about 10. Also, the synthetic pot, “spice,” is particularly bad. Some types can cause long term or permanent psychotic episodes.

This result seems to be an outlier. Pot has been linked to schizophrenia and reduced short term memory in the past but not to this degree.

I wouldn’t take this one paper too seriously without a lot of replication.

“Those in the first group had all suffered ‘first-episode psychosis’ – a diagnosed first occurrence of the disorder.

The second group were volunteers who agreed to answer questions about themselves – including on cannabis use and mental health history.

Some had suffered psychosis, others not. They were not told the nature of the project. The academics found those in the first group were more likely to smoke cannabis daily – and to smoke skunk – than those in the second.”

This seems like a flawed methodology to me. The second group, the control group, is being asked to self-diagnose psychosis (or being judged for psychosis through self reported data), while the first group was medically diagnosed properly. Therefore, the data about the incidence of psychosis in the second group is not comparable to the first.

I rarely smoke marijuana, but a couple of years ago someone gave me a marijuana brownie that I ate one night while my girlfriend was at work. I thought I was going to die; I desperately wanted to get a drink of water, but it took me half an hour to get out of my chair, and I barely made it to the kitchen.

That repeated itself about an hour later. I finally staggered to bed, and five hours later I was still staggering on my way to the bathroom. Nobody can tell me marijuana is harmless.

Man, I’m glad all we had was junk Mexican weed back in my youth. I would have been even crazier than I am now, if it’d been stronger.

Choom was probably as strong as skunk weed.

So who cares if he has reefer madness. What's this pot head going to do become present of the United States and negotiate with Fidel Castro and Iran, have prayer meetings and pray to Allah in the White House. Then blame it all on the Crusades. You just can't make this stuff up.

All this brought to you by your Demovratic Party.

I’d say the Daily Mail author doesen’t know what they’re writing about, calling skunk weed stronger than hash? Hash is made from trichomes, which come from strong pot, but that hash is way more potent than pot. Just sayin’...

This "leaked" "research" - IF accurately reported by the Reefer Madness gang at the Daily Mail - is BULLSH*T! Specifically, it's the old correlation-is-the-causation-we-want-to-find nonsense that's been peddled for decades; the fact is that the reported results could be explained every bit as well by a predisposition (possibly genetic: http://freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/3171782/posts) to psychosis causing an increased likelihood of using cannabis.

The academics found those in the first group were more likely to smoke cannabis daily – and to smoke skunk – than those in the second.

The researchers say: ‘Skunk use alone was responsible for 24 per cent of adults presenting with first-episode psychosis to the psychiatric services in South London.’

It’s temporary but this is oddly one area I agree with the pot hysteria folk

Very potent weed in many forms can freak out those new to it or suseptible similar but not quite as bad as acid once did in its heyday

Good pot today runs 15-25% THC and higher in concentrated forms

Most folks simply smoke less though I know plenty acclimated folks who can only get so high off leaf regardless

Oils or edibles are the most culpable to cause panic attacks which is more or less what’s initiated

Observing this for 45 years now my experience is fragile folks and women who tend to fear easier in general are most prone

For those who must....keep Xanax or booze handy

Both will soothe the unease or panic

Rare is too much pot a worthy hospital visit but with edibles and oils today I can see it

I hate to see pot become a test drug like this

We had LSD for that

I do recommend LSD to most folks ...,emphatically

Exponentially emphatically

It’s an ecclesiastical intoxicant.... only for a resolute brain
