It's chowing down on all that delectable CO 2.

Growing up, the youngest sibling planted an acorn, and it sprouted.
My brother didn't want to have to deal with it, so while cutting the grass, he didn't see it...

Daughter and I planted a pin oak sapling about ten years ago.
It seemed to grow about as fast as a sugar maple. Pretty tree.

Twenty years ago a friend was clearing an area for a driveway. There were two little white oaks that I wanted. I took my time with the first one, wrapped the root ball, put it in my truck. I started on the second one, the dozer showed up and I had to make way. I tied a rope to the trunk at ground level, hooked it to my trailer hitch and snatched it out of the ground. I came home and planted them.
The one with the big root ball never did a thing, just died. The one with the little stub of roots is 30 feet tall and shades a 40 foot circle. It never dropped a leaf.

I get 10-20 oak saplings every year on my little quarter acre. The squirrels bring the acorns from the oak tree across the street and plant them all over my yard — even in my pots and planter boxes! I yank them out every year, but they keep burying the nuts.
