Sam Adams...Urban Ninja
Self | January 26, 2015 | PJ-Comix

The title of this thread is why I can't watch any more episodes of the History Channel's "Sons of Liberty." In their need to appeal to modern young audiences, they turned Sam Adams into a sort of modern urban Ninja warrior. After watching that scene of Sam Adams doing fancy gymnastics flipping around and hopping from rooftop to rooftop pretty much soured me on this series.

The only possible good result from "Sons of Liberty" would be a TV parody of it. Hey, why not flash an "S" signal into the clouds to signal that the services of Sam Adams, Ninja warrior is needed?

Oh, and the usage of modern slang did not help this show's credibility.

Thanks. I was sort of thinking (avidly, I might add) in seeing something truthful about this time in our history.

I was desperately hoping it wouldn’t get contaminated with youthful and uneducated (read, no actual research into what happened) portrayals.

Still, even if it’s been ‘hipped up’ to relate to a younger uneducated demographic, it still might not be so bad - hopefully. I’ll still at least watch the first episode and hope for the best.

Regardless, thanks for your opinion.

It looked interesting from the previews.

I will probably prefer the History Channel’s “The Men who built America” series. Which is addicting!

I’m gonna watch it, regardless. Depending on how truthful it is, I might have my grand daughters watch it.

I watched part of it too. I got bored with it but I didn’t get upset about the portrayal of Adams. That’s because I gave up thinking the History Channel was really about history a long time ago. Their shows are basically modern action movies or soap operas dressed up as period pieces. So it wouldn’t surprise me if, in the next episode, Sam Adams single-handedly takes on an entire squad of Redcoats.

The only thing that bothered me was the prolific use of the word “bull$hit”.

Oh, and the REAL Sam Adams in 1765 was 43 years old. A little old for rooftop gymnastics while escaping from the Redcoats.

I watched Schindler’s list on AHC then switched over to the History channel and immediately wished I hadn’t. It left me with the impression that our founders had more in common with the “hands up don’t shoot” looters than the rest of us.

“The Patriots” on AHC is more my style. Narrated reenactments of historical events minus the acting and badly faked accents.

As far as history based drama is concerned, AMC’s “Turn” is the way to go despite the screeching of the FR church ladies who are still whining about a 12 second sex scene in a whole season. (its a drama after all) Plus the known history of the Culper spy ring is surprisingly accurate for a big money production.

It was funny to watch lol.

I recorded the first episode. After I watch it I will decide. But I doubt I’ll continue as I have so many more things to do besides watch TV.

I never watch anything as it comes on. I always record.

I’m with you. I didn’t make it through the 1st hour, before I went looking for police chase videos. Doing modern metro drama in colonial costume was just more than I could stand. They also must have thought that in the age of an income tax, we were all incapable of understanding how taxes were levied and collected in Colonial America. I rewatched the American Hero Channel’s (AHC) series in the director’s cut version and thought it very well done. They paid attention to the little details and kept to the historical account. It needed to be at least six hours though and not just three.

Next episode they have Sam going to what would come to be Alaska in order to mine gold in a swamp while logging and catching seafood. There also might be ghosts and bigfoots involved.

God Help anyone who actually thinks the History Channel is history. Based on some of their programs, you’d start believing that our Alien overlords were about to come back and enslave us all!!

Considering the direction we're headed, is that really any different?

Sam Adams the focal point hero in a “history” show sponsored by Sam Adams Brewery? Sure, no favoritism there.

I know he was important but....

Yeah I love hearing about the unknown patriots of the revolution.

Salem poor, the former slave who had bought his own freedom (which tells me he was actually an indentured servant who had been free to earn money on the side) and left his farm to fight at Breeds hill. He was given a congressional commendation at the request of more than a dozen militia officers who fought beside him.
