Apparently, Jerry Falwell and Larry Flint became good friends.

I haven't seen this posted here. With current events citing this case, that went all the way to the Supreme Court, it is worth looking back at these two men. Parody of public figures and the first amendment.

I saw someone on MSNBC compare the Charlie Hebdo shooting to Falwell suing Flynt. First, Falwell didn’t sue over anything religious but over a cartoon he thought libeled him. Second, as this article notes, after he lost, Falwell reached out to Flynt, became his friend and witnessed to him and prayed for him. Yeah, that’s exactly like what happened in Paris.

The article is an accurate re-telling of a court case that i held as interesting.

The Judge Rehnquist statement, now a part of law:
“The justices held that a parody of a public figure was protected under the 1st Amendment even if it was outrageous, even if it was “doubtless gross and repugnant,” as they put it, and even if it was designed to inflict emotional distress.”, can be used in defense against organizations like CAIR.

I shall not forget that it was Jerry Falwell, who came out publicly, and blamed Americans, especially those of the Pagan faiths, directly for the 9/11 attacks.
