Is New Year’s Eve the Worst Holiday?
Richocet ^ | December 30, 2014 | Jon Gabriel

As a kid, New Year’s Eve fascinated me. It was a night when grown-ups dressed up, drank fancy cocktails and danced across ballroom floors. Granted, my parents only went out a time or two, but I had seen the movies. Most adults had the times of their lives and I couldn’t wait to join them. We kids would fight to stay up late, bang pots and pans and light the illicit firework or two, but it just wasn’t the same.

Once I hit drinking age, I spent several New Year’s Eves at college bars or block parties where I could finally join the excitement. I rarely found much. Most the celebrations were overcrowded nightmares of sweaty throngs and queasy drinkers. Hardly the tuxedo-clad soirées I had imagined as a lad. There wasn’t even a big band, for pity’s sake.

New years doesn’t do much for me either. I’ll be in bed before midnight.

Tonight, my family is going to walk across the street and play games until midnight with some of our neighbors.

Fun. But not a big deal.

Halloween is the worst

NYE has always been a firefight. Nothing but guns going off.

Makes me think I never got back from al-Anbar.

Locked doors, explosions going off, puppy shivering next to me, wondering if it’s him or me.

My old parish we had Mass then a party with board games and food. All home, well before Midnight. I will be fast asleep by midnight, I have to work the next day. Even if I didn’t have to work. Starting the new year off with a hangover never made sense to me.

The way I look at it, it’s a great excuse for a day off on New Years Day. New Year’s Eve? Fuhgedaboudit.

I’ve shared that experience at Disney World - the Latinos and Blacks were pushing to the front of the lines in large packs. I was with my sister, a teacher.

Three may have gotten through before she locked her hands on the line rails and stopped the soul train. They tried to break through her grip - not a chance.

Then she started the whisper down the lane trick and the ride guy tossed the violators out of the line after they had waited and finally made it to the gate. Teachers run the circus of life - both within and outside the classroom. But that was the last time we went to Disney World.

As for New Year’s Eve, I am allergic to booze so we go to a few parties and come home early for goal setting. I’m as fun as a barrel of monkeys on New Years Eve. : )

I decided not to mention it at first but yes the people who my wife almost got into fights wife were all Latinos. By the way my wife is from Guatemala. The worst are the South American tourists from Colombia, Venezuela, and Brazil. These are the arrogant people with money who think everyone else are there to serve their needs. My wife talked to a young person Disney brings in the work the holiday from Latin America and she said the Brazilians are the worst.

NYC is a sad place. IMHO

With the election of DeBlasio, Times Square should be renamed Red Square... or maybe Red Square west. We are in the U.S.S of A, afterall.

Our church has a late night time of Praise & Worship, short sermon, and prayer.

When I was young and still able to enjoy my cups.....I would stay home on New Years Eve.....not wanting to be on the same roads with all the amateurs

I got arrested and beaten by the LAPD one New Years Eve (actually early New Years Day). I smashed my VW into a telephone pole attempting to elude the police. I was drunk and ready to fight so the cops beat me down. Many, many hours later I was processed into LA County Jail. What a hellhole!

What heartwarming memory doesn't include the phrase "attempting to elude the police"?

I never understood the wisdom of waking up on the first day of the new year with a splitting headache.

Face it other than in the movies or TV who really has these fabulous News Year’s or Christmas parties in real life?

My last Disneyland visit: Chinese tourists let their toddler boy urinate onto the pavement while in line ahead of me. Everyone had to walk by the pee puddle. A few vocal complaints. The Chicoms couldn’t care less.

Far as I’m concerned, it’s just a day to buy a new calendar. We had to move a few hundred miles away in search of employment five years ago. Friends from our old church usually have a get together so we get to see lots of friends. That’s all.

With the cops on a defacto work stoppage (and with good reason after DeBlazio or Wilhelm or whatever the POSs name is was instrumental in getting those 2 cops killed). I would want to be in Times Square tonight.

Poor you! It’s absolutely the worst holiday of the year. We absolutely despise it. We stay home, make dinner and watch The Honeymooners.

Where did you live that you heard guns going off all night? I’ve been in NYC for 40 years now and have only heard horn-honking and drunken laughter.

Wait until you are 74 we have never celebrated NY eve. There is a country club and golf course close to where we live and they always have fireworks. So we wait until that is over to try to sleep because our dogs always go crazy till the noise is over.
