This was 15 minutes ago in Toledo, Ohio at the Kroger's grocery store/gas station.
Yes, I had the maximum $1 per gallon discount because I bought a bunch of gift cards and groceries from Kroger's for Christmas.
Still, $.85/gallon for 87 octane!?!
I haven't seen $.85/gallon for about 25 years.
For that reason, it seemed significant and worth sharing.
This is unprecedented.

This is unprecedented.
I started driving in the early 80s when .70 cents was high.

I started in 1987. I think I remember gas as being slightly less than a dollar/gallon at about that time. seems like it was either leaded or unleaded back then.

I remember digging in the couch and chair for lost change to buy a gallon of gas for my mini bike back in the early 70’s. Price back then was .25 a gallon.

LOL! So, Baby Bro was up from San Diego for Christmas. Gorgeous weather (at the time) - so what was he taking pictures of, the mountains, the lake, the trees...no. He was taking pictures of the gas pumps. ;-)

Whoa!
Could’ve filled my tank for $10 bucks.

In taking a look at my gas map for Toledo, I see the lowest price is $1.62 and that was for cash.
It looks like it ranges around $1.69 to $1.79 in Toledo.

I'm highlighting this, because it's important for other readers to see it.
We do the same thing every year: wait until Kroger's has the 4X fuel points promotions for gift cards, and then load up on gifts for friends and family. This year, we had a 70 cent discount, but my new car has a smaller tank and I couldn't pump as much.
I wish I still had the few 5-gallon gas cans I had before we moved (and I gave them away). I could have stored another tankful of gas, and used them instead of filling up at the pump.

I remember when gas went up to .40 a gallon, and my cheapskate brother charged me for it to drive me across town. He hasn’t changed.

actually, I forgot, I only had .90 cents off. I thought I had the whole dollar. I think I missed it by a couple of bucks. I have the flu. My brain isn't working right.
Even with the discount however, I can't imagine that Kroger's would allow themselves to lose money. They have to be breaking even at least. That ought to give us an idea of what the real gas price is right now.

Earlier this year, I even bought gift cards for personal use when Fry’s (Kroger) had 4x fuel points. At one point I had 1600 fuel points. I bought a Bath & Body Works GC because their semiannual sale was coming up, so I saved money there as well as at the pump. Sweet!

At one service station in Texas in ‘73 or ‘74, it went from 23 cents straight to 49 cents in one night.
