It has been my experience that it is rarely the computer that fails. My car is computerized, yet I have replaced motor mount, battery, wheel bearings, brakes, air filter, oil filter, oil, various lights, tensioner pulley, fuses, fixed the window cranks, etc.

I have a vehicle that's computerized. Swapping the computer out is easy, if care is taken with the plastic wire connectors to the outside of it (which connectors or whole wire harnesses can also be replaced if too brittle). Buying a new computer requires an extra few dollars called a core charge, which tells me that the old one is rebuilt somewhere for resale. Some people have also replaced computers on vehicles with older tech. individual components.
