An Indiana man was mauled to death by his pet pit bull on Christmas Day, Portage police say.
Edward L. Cahill, 40, was discovered on the living room floor by his girlfriend when she returned from visiting relatives for the holiday. Cahill was unresponsive, NBC Chicago reports.
Authorities were called to a home in the 5500 block of Tulip Avenue at about 8:14 p.m. Cahill was found dead on the floor covered in blood and with multiple lacerations on his face and arms, the Portage police report. A county coroner pronounced Cahill dead at the scene and determined his cause of death was from a dog mauling.
According to Fox Chicago, Cahill's pet pit bull, "Fat Boy," was at fault. Police say the dog was aggressively barking, growling and lunging at officers. A stun gun and an animal control pole was used to get "Fat Boy" under control.
NBC Chicago says the couple raised their dogs since they were puppies, however "Fat Boy" has consistently been aggressive. The dog bit Cahill and his girlfriend's son in the past, the police report adds.

“He’s a good dog, he’s trying to turn his life around.”
Thanks Behind Liberal Lines.
Is this a "Play stupid games, win stupid prizes" situation?
It's sad that Mr. Cahill is dead. At least the dog didn't also kill his girlfriend and her son.
“people” who have Pit Bulls, especially after they have bitten, GET what they deserve! Thank God the dog didn’t kill an innocent person.
It just as easily could have been a dachshund.
I’ve know many. All sweethearts. If you raise them to kill or not train them to be gentle you have a problem.
It’s nature AND NURTURE.
Fat Boy was just a gentle giant! LOL
My vet agrees. He believes breeding pit bulls should be banned.
:’)
All he wants for Christmas was dog’s two front teeth,
Dog’s two front teeth,
Dog’s two front teeth...
The dog bit Cahill and his girlfriend’s son in the past, the police report adds.....
he were a good dog! he had just started attending 12 step meetings...and eveythang.
“Hi Im Fat Boy and Im a Bite-a-holic!””
Could he have had rabies?
Anyway, my 120 pound labrador hasn’t a mean bone in his body. I think he would bite to protect me, but he would not like it.
Somewhere out there in cyberspace is a list of 29 smiling dogs. One is a pit bull and it is sooooo cute.
Funny you should mention that. I met my niece's 3 year old PB Christmas day when she brought it to the family gathering.
It was a rescue when she got it 2 years ago and from what she said, scared to death of people, totally untrained and a nightmare for the first year.
You would never have believed the transformation.....This dog fit in wonderfully with all the people and other animals in attendance and not being a dog lover, I have to admit that this dog was definitely a keeper.........
In fact, this dog was not only lovable but more disciplined than the others that were there.......It must have been a mutant.
I don’t buy it. Different breeds have different characteristics bred into them and it has nothing to do with how they are raised. A golden retriever is born to fetch. A bloodhound is born to sniff. A cattle dog is born to herd. Pit bulls were nice dogs 50 years ago but now the breed has been turned into something wholly different. It would take another 50 years to breed the aggressiveness out of them again. And that will never happen because they’re too many gangbangers breeding them to be aggressive.
Agreed. They say dogs are like their owners. Pitbulls are aggressive and not particularly bright.
My neighbor had an Akita dog. As a puppy he named it Cujo. He laughed at its bad behavior and never corrected the dogs behavior.
This went on until my neighbor had to get 60 stitches when the dog decided to exert its dominance on its owner. This could have been nipped in the beginning. Instead you have an injured owner and a euthanized dog.
If you raise a dog with no controls, you reap what you sow.
Dogs are....well Animals...and Animals will do what they do.
Once let to go wild....they ...will
Your vet should be hanged.
Just saying.
Or become a gynecologist
