Actually the earliest sunset is usually Dec 7, two weeks before the solstice.

It varies by latitude. Probably also varies by height and where exactly you are in the time zone.

For example here in Seattle, the earliest sunset is at 4:18 But the sun sets at 4:18, according to Seattle Science Center, over the span of eleven days starting on December 6th and ending on December 16th.

A reasonable understanding of this is that the earliest sunset is in the middle of this whole range... or December 11th.
