I have a Lenova C440 All-in-One Windows 8.1 PC.
Recently I tried to install an application from the DVD installer disc. It failed. The first part of the process, choosing the location and the type of install, worked fine, but when the disc was supposed to spin up and copy/install all the files, it just sat there with no activity.
After several minutes, I canceled out of it. I tried an install disc for a different app, and it failed similarly.
I have done an Internet search for the issue, and have tried a few of the suggestions, including a couple or three things from the Microsoft Support website. No change.
Suggestions, please?
Might try it in safe mode...If it installs, it may then not run in normal boot...so...
There are dozens of issues reported on the ms forums...but it seems that you really need to be logged on as admin, and there are issues related to certain running services. One was the tablet pc service that was interfering...other issues related to user profiles...for example.....
You need to make sure your system has all the current upgrades and patches. This goes for ANY version of Windows. You will see people on here howling about how Win 8.1 stinks and how you should go back to using 7. These are the likely the same people that were howling about how Win 7 stank, and were telling everybody to go back to Vista or XP.
In my opinion, Win 8.1 is the BEST Win so far. It’s robust, VERY user friendly, very maintenance friendly, more virus-resistant than any earlier versions, and so far has run every software package (new and old) that I have installed on it. I have it on two desktops, and two laptops. I even run it dual-boot on another Ubuntu Linux box. However, I do like running it configured to boot into the older Win7/Vista style desktop. (You can change this in the boot up configuration.)
If you Google your laptop and 8.1 software install issues, you might come up with some answers. Don’t make the mistake of going back to an older version of Windows on that machine. You may discover than it will have the same issues.
Keep in mind Windows 8 no longer uses F8 at boot to enter Safe Mode. You have to reboot into it thru the Charms area PC Settings in Update and Recovery...
A question I would have in similar circumstances is: Is it the CD/DVD ROM (hardware) or is it something with Windows (software)? You offered a clue when you said that you tried to install something else from the same drive with similar results (failed install).
If you have sufficient disk space you could try copying the install files from the drive to your local “C” drive and run the installation from there (typically a “setup.exe” or “Install.exe” - remember to choose “Run as Administrator). If the install succeeds you may have a hardware failure with the CD/DVD player. If it fails again your problem likely lies within the operating system.

Get a Mac and all your computer problems will disappear.
Try installing it in safe mode I’ve been using the same photoshop program for years, won’t install in 8.1 the regular way.
Strangely, I am logged into an Admin account.
That was my first thought, so I bought an external USB DVD burner. No change.

Don’t mess with windows installer, just pop the disc in, it should open.
First thing, install CLASSIC SHELL, get rid of all the “CHARMS” nonsense.
Find Setup.exe on the disk, right click—>properties—>on one of the tabs you can choose to run in compatibility Win XP from one of the carrots.
That was my first thought as well. Software from 2010 should be able to run compatible with Windows 7, if not, try compatible with Windows XP.

Bummer. My only other suggestion is to not discount an update or some other add-on hosing some system files. Try system restore as far back as you can. Otherwise, it sounds like you’re going to have to have someone look at it if the other replies aren’t of any help.
I installed some add-on at work that was for another purpose and ever since Media Player won’t load. you just never know. In my case I just don’t have the time to deal with it and it only affects Media Player.
I haven’t solved the issue yet, but I worked around it to provide for the immediate need by purchasing the latest version of Streets & Trips, 2013, and installing it from the downloaded .exe file.
Maybe when Windows 8.2 is released, I can download that to resolve the original issue.

Either this, or a bad burn of the ISO file, or a flaky download of the ISO file.

It's a bad idea to load the Insider as an update to the current OS, whatever that is.
I'm writing this from a release that I just downloaded last evening and burned the disk this AM on another computer with almost-new Memorex DVD burner. The install turned out really good with no hitches whatsoever.
This is a Dell Dimension 4700C, 2.8GHz CPU, 1Gb RAM. It does have a slim CDRW/DVD combo drive, and is a totally new install, on a 80Mb Seagate drive. From:

The irony is that you have to transfer it to a DVD to install it.
