This was a poorly written article, hyped certain acts. Took me a bit of clicking to find their slideshow with the whole list ("full coverage" initially just displayed the same article in a new window). The article itself did not enumerate all of the performers and they skipped McCartney in their writing of the top 10. 3 of the women they wrote about were not even in their top 20.
1 - Dr. Dre $620,000,000
2 - Beyonce $115,000,000
3 - The Eagles $100,000,000
4 - Bon Jovi $82,000,000
5 - Bruce Springsteen $81,000,000
6 - Justin Bieber $80,000,000
7 - One Direction $75,000,000
8 - Paul McCartney: $71 million
9 - DJ Calvin Harris $66,000,000
10 - Toby Keith $65,000,000
11 - Taylor Swift $64,000,000
12 (3 way tie)
Bruno Mars $60,000,000
Jay Z $60,000,000
Diddy $60,000,000

So much for the “a black man cannot get ahead” meme.
It pays to be a Democrat.
“working class heroes” from New Jersey are also making good bread.
Frankly I don’t see how this is indicative that the music industry is having lean years.

One of them got a lot of money from Apple. Some of the others got money from corporate sponsorships and advertising.

Almost all of Dre’s money is from Headphones/speakers and record label.

The Chronic. Probably the best record that year.
And Rap/HipHop took a nosedive after that.

Yeah, I hear dying from AIDS is not fun.
I have no clue if MC Ren and DJ Yella are still alive...

Numbers 3,4,5, and 8 are basically nostalgia acts.
Some good money in "good old days" toe-tapping.
