SEATTLE: Microsoft expects to have its new Windows 10 operating system on the market by autumn 2015, slightly later than previous comments had suggested.
Chief operating officer Kevin Turner told Japanese news service Nikkei on Wednesday that the new system would be released "early next fall."
Microsoft has not publicly set a firm timetable for the release of Windows 10, but only last week suggested the possibility of an earlier release.
"By next late summer and early fall we'll be able to bring out this particular OS (operating system). That's the current plan of record," Turner told the Credit Suisse Technology Conference last Thursday.
An autumn release would put Windows 10 on track for launch three years after Windows 8, which got a mixed reception as it confused many traditional PC users with a design more suited to tablets.
Microsoft unveiled the name Windows 10 in late September, saying the jump in numbers from 8 to 10 marked a leap as it looks to unify the way people work on tablets, phones and traditional computers.

public: “What’s wrong with the current operating system”
Microsoft: “We need more money”
public: “Oh...”
I have been running Win10 for a while now as a beta tester.
It’s pretty darn good, imo.
They’re skipping the name “Windows 9,” then, I take it?

So, why will it take almost a year to release?
They still have to take bids for the bloatware that'll be attached to it.
I have read that some (darned poor) software checks for the operating system name and is confounding Windows 95 and 98 with Windows 9.
Someone made the mistake of promising “9” for free.
Therefore, “9” shall never exist.
My understanding is that the reason they are skipping "Windows 9" is that it might break some legacy software that checks for the versions of Windows, and it might confuse "Windows 9" for Windows 95 or 98.
I wanted to run some old DOS apps and rediscovered the limitations of the command line. So I downloaded the free VM player and installed Windows 98 to it. Now I can run that in a window on my Windows 7 64 bit operating system.
We have a handful of testers using Win10 and they are very impressed with it. Of course, they were also very impressed with Vista while it was in beta before it got detailed and full of bloatware.
Assuming that Win10 stays on track and doesn’t derail, our testers have stated that it looks more like Win7 and is faster than Win8. That sounds good to me!
Windows 10 kernel version to go up from 6.4 to 10.0 ,this could be the delay
I used DR DOS 6 for a while. Liked its memory management better than MSDOS. I really liked IBM DOS 7 though, because it had REXX.
Instead of VM-Ware player, you might want to use Oracle VirtualBox. It has a lot more options and features.
I wanted to make an MS-DOS image and it isn’t possible in the VMware player because you need to make an adjustment to the virtual computer’s BIOS settings. You can do this with VirtualBox, which can also export OS images to VMware.
