(CNSNews.com) - Speaking at a "college opportunity summit" on Thursday, First Lady Michelle Obama described "two worlds" of college-bound students:
"[T]he fact is that right now, a small number of students are getting every advantage in the college admissions race, while millions of other students who are just as talented can't even begin to compete."
Mrs. Obama was making a pitch for expanded college counseling. She said too many students go through school without any real guidance on how to get into college or how to pay for it.
She described one world, where students "don't know what classes to take, or how to prepare for the SAT or the ACT. No one helps them decide which colleges to apply to. No one reviews the their applications. And plenty of kids have no idea that they're eligible for financial aid, so they assume they just can't afford college, and they don't even bother to apply.

Amen.
High School students of all races have local community colleges, and poor students can receive a PELL Grant, that never has to be repaid (taxpayer dollars), to learn a trade, or get an Associates Degree.
The Pell Grant is enough to pay the entire cost of classes and books...with the college giving the student ‘a pay out of the balance’. That is enough to pay for transportation for an entire semester in some cases. The Grant pays by semester.
So ANY STUDENT who says I can’t afford to go to college, either hasn’t checked it out, their parents make just a little too much money, or they could give a ‘rat’s rear’ about learning a trade or going to college.
In fact, students with poor grades from HS can take remedial classes in college to get them up to speed, and that is also paid for in the grant. I find it inexcusable that these people say there is no way to get out of the ghetto. If you live in a city over 100,000... any bus service would go by the community college locally, unless it is over ten miles out of town.
Lazy, drugs, or ‘entitlement minded’ keeps most people from getting out of a bad situation. IT IS NOT COLOR. I taught Criminal Justice at the local Community College level for years, and we had plenty of poor blacks attending, who cared about getting a decent job.
Ever looked at monthly welfare packages delivered to the useless-clueless-helpless?
Includes toilet paper with instructions printed on it... in rebus.
Can't discriminate against the cursive deprived!!
Hell yeah, let's do it!
It's not "fair" that I only have a 40" flatscreen; your city or mine?
Dead on. There are already opportunities. For decades we’ve been told program after program is being created for “opportunities”, yet, we keep being told more program must be created. I thought the last unteen programs corrected the situation?
How about Eleanor Roosevelt? Didn't you find her rather annoying? Especially during the first couple of terms her husband served?
Regards,
There is no age limit to getting a Pell Grant from the government, and the deadline for application is usually April for the same year of classes beginning in August, it is a ‘first come-first serve’ basis. I have never known anyone who qualified not getting money, if they met the deadline for application.
FAFSA ONLINE takes the applications, for those who do not want to go to the financial assistance office. The financial part is filled out using the last year’s Income Tax Form for an individual or for High School students, their parents last year Income Tax forms filed. So IRS Income Tax filings early help the person get their FAFSA application filed on time.
FAFSA looks for other grants or scholarships the student may qualify for, in my State there is a state grant for the poor that adds more money to helping with that year’s costs.
If the person gets good enough grades for a couple of years, it is possible to get into a nice university...and that year the grant will be used there, but costs are more and it does mean one either works part time, becomes a class assistant, or gets a student loan. Many ways to supplement the grant out there.
Now you went and did it!!!
I resemble that remark!
Dude! Always remember, age and experience beats youth and skill!
Every time.
One thing that needs to be noted is that each year the student must apply again by the deadline for the next year (two semesters), and so on, until they finish their education. That is because income changes each year, and it is reflected on the 1041 (A?) etc. Income Tax Forms...which may or may not increase or decrease the amount of the Pell Grant.
better luck getting into college if you go to high school.....hellooooooo !!!
maybe if these kids would get a K-12 education first, they might pass an entrance exam.
Shouldn't all that have been printed in cursive?
For the Masters?
There
Fixed it.
I wonder who the oldest and youngest Freepers here are.
Damn. You brought out the trump card; slavery. You win.
Stop digging!
That is clearly sexist!
For once, I agree with zmichelle on this. The shools have all sorts of administrators, but no guidance counsellors, at least not on the west coast.
” My kids had two dedicated full time counselors. [One male, one female!] “
Yep you did... If it wasn’t clear enough.
Like I said...there are classes that will help those who graduated, without knowing what they needed to know for class. True, not all pass the entrance exam, but we are talking about community college here, not Harvard or Yale.
So did my kids...Mom and Dad.
Have you ever read her Princeton thesis? It's available on line. It's blatantly racist (black racist, that is), and it's full of grammatical errors. Princeton would never have accepted it from a white male.
