8th grade Latin class

How times have changed. I doubt if one in a thousand middle schools even have such a class today.

American kids can hardly speak or write their own mother tongue nowadays.

This school still has Latin--it continues to be a REQUIRED subject there. It is a public high school (6 grades in one building) but for those who live outside of the city and who qualify, the city charges tuition.

My daughter started taking Latin in middle school. Last year, in fact, when she was in eighth grade.

Now she's a high school freshman. We got her first report card for the year a couple of weeks ago. All her grades were 90 or above (we are a little disappointed with that) except for one: she got a 100% in Latin!. On her report card! For the first quarter!

She seems to have a flair for Latin. I'm very proud of that.

She also is fluent in Chinese, having spent four or five summers there with her grandparents and aunts and cousins.

What school is that? It sounds like one of the 'one in a thousand' I referred to upthread.

My point was, there was a time in America when something like an 8th grade Latin class was commonplace. Not so, today. It's just another sign of decay in our country.
