As I understand it, many of these allegations go back years. Why have these women waited until now to come forward?

My suspicion is that they are being paid to do so by a certain group of individuals unhappy that Bill Cosby left the plantation. Cosby doesn’t fit in with their constant refrain that black people can’t move up because of white racism.

They did something similar to Herman Cain. No doubt they will do the same with Dr. Carson.

Why did they wait?

Cosby was rich and powerful in the industry and they didn’t all wait.

An actress from his sitcom filed a police report in 2000, the police didn’t write in his name and never contacted him, another woman who was drugged and raped in 2004 went to the cops and while the DA says the evidence was too little to convict, he believes the woman, in her case as 13 or so more women came forward willing to testify to his rape methods, he settled out of court with her.

This is a pretty diverse group of women with claims going back to the 60s, for instance Lou Ferrigno didn’t learn about his wife’s long past run in with Cosby until about 5 years ago.

A number of these women are like that, some you would recognize.

Because they never thought anyone would believe them, they didn’t want to accuse such a famous man, they felt responsible (for being alone with him, taking pills, etc), didn’t want to describe what happened, etc. They were going to take it to their graves, but then when 3, 8, 12 women come forward, CLEARLY IT HAS AN EFFECT ON THE PUBLIC. So they feel believed and safe.

Cosby never left the plantation. There’s no political component to this. Women have been saying this about Cosby for decades. Several reported these accusations close to the time when they allegedly happened.

This isn’t a big secret.

As to why now, a comedian cracked a joke about this, it got caught in the public wind, and got around. At around that time, Cosby’s publicity people asked fans to create internet memes of Cosby, but took a hit when some raised the rape accusations in their memes.

But for the meme, this probably would not have taken off.
