The story that Costco told me was that people would buy a bunch of stuff, pay for it, take it out to their car, come back in with an empty cart, load all the same stuff in the cart and walk out again without paying for it using the same receipt.

That's why they now count the items in the cart, match them to the receipt and put a nice squiggly line across the receipt. No more double-dipping.

At least, that is what they told me when I asked.

Sounds reasonable, but it’s the attitude and the insistence that stopped me from going there again.
