There is a long list of women* who have amassed personal fortunes by divorcing rich husbands and as far as I can tell, they deserved every penny. This week Sue Ann Hamm joined it when a court ordered her ex-husband, Harold Hamm, the Oklahoma oil man, to pay her some $1 billion in cash and assets, or about $38 million per year of a 26-year marriage.
Ms. Hamm plans to appeal on the grounds that the award grossly undervalues her share of the wealth accumulated during the marriage, Reuters reported on Thursday. If Ms. Hamm gets anywhere near half of Mr. Hamms stake in his oil company, currently valued around $13.5 billion, she will catapult to No. 1 on the rich divorcee list, far outdistancing Elena Rybolovleva, who received $4.8 billion this year from her ex-husband, Dmitri Rybolovlev, the Russian fertilizer king.
Meanwhile, back in the real world, divorce is still financially devastating. Overall, a mans income drops 23 percent after divorce, while a womans income drops 41 percent.
Divorce is also increasingly common among couples, like the Hamms, who are age 50 and older. (Ms. Hamm is in her late 50s and Mr. Hamm is 68.) From 1990 to 2010, the divorce rate doubled for people 50+, while the rate for the general population was flat, according to a report this month in the AARP Bulletin by Jane Bryant Quinn. In all, one fourth of all divorces in 2010 were for people age 50 and up.

What’s the joke about a tornado and divorce? I think the punchline is something like “either way a redneck is going to lose his trailer”.
Yep, that describes my first marrage/divorce.

What it tells me is that the author sees latching on to a wealthy man with a view to divorcing him later as a viable and worthy method for a woman to acquire wealth.
It's no wonder that many men are shying away from marriage these days.
That said, any wealthy man who would dump a loyal first wife in order to acquire a "trophy" wife is a fool. Sometimes men allow their vanity and stupidity to set themselves up for a fall.
Iv’e been married three times (not proud) but one died (PBUH) and the other two wanted divorced so bad they didn’t ask for a cent. I still love those two shiiteheads. One was asked by the Family Court Judge “ Do you know you can get recompensed by this man? What do you want from him?” She said “I want him the F-—K out of my life!!!” She is still near and dear to my heart.
I think I’d not have shared that. lol.
One of my peeps at work is going through a horrible divorce. I don’t usually say this about another mom, but, his ex-wife ain’t wrapped right.
Because of child support, other financial difficulties and our seasonal slowdown at work, he lost his home.
It is brutal out there, especially for young people with children involved. That is who is really suffering.
My wife and I made an agreement before we wed: “murder before divorce.”
I just can’t imagine anyone in their right mind deciding to file for divorce at Christmas time. Not sure what part about “until death do us part” of their vows they obviously did not take seriously. I do believe there are some reasons why a divorce might be sought such as substance or physical abuse, or one of the persons having an affair which destroys trust. Perhaps more thought given to the reasons for marrying a particular person before taking the plunge might be in order.
My generation was really big on “marrying your own kind” and stressed compatibility in religion, race, politics, money aspirations, culture, having children, education, etc. Yet I see more and more people particularly over 60 who are newly single and trying to figure out what to do about the rest of their lives. Sad.
One of the most disturbing things I heard Suze Orman say on her show was counseling a woman considering divorce to take steps to protect her assets, get lists of account, etc, and then calculate how long she’d been there and stick it out a few more months if she was close to being able to qualify to draw on his Social Security.
I didn't ask for alimony, just very modest child support until she turned 18. I was a stay at home mother for 23 years. He has as much income as he ever had, I am a shade above the poverty line. I just wanted out and we were both unhappy.
Some of us ex-wives are not money grubbing bitches.
On the other hand. Say you have a billion dollars. Maybe several billion. You have the G450 and pilot in standby. You have the awesome cars. You are celebrated everywhere you go.
And who is your only approved sexual outlet? An entitled woman. One old batty crone who is hanging out with her junior league friends all day, and who is the one person who will show you no respect. The person who breezily knows that she is a guaranteed billionaire despite the fact that no drilling company would have ever hired her for receptionist except she was the drillers wife.
Yeah, that puts the lead in the old pencil, doesn’t it? The way its supposed to work is that she is supposed to have the common decency turn her head and let him enjoy life a little with a Russian tennis star or whatever.
Yeah, I said it.
A hit man is always cheaper than a lawyer.
You should teach seminars.
It’s like the old joke
A rich tycoon (can’t say Jew anymore) was having dinner with his wife when he confessed that the attractive woman at the table to their right was his mistress. She was aghast and stammered “How could you do that to me after 30 years?”. He replied “Everyone does it. Goldberg’s mistress is at the table near the window. She looked over and then said “Our’s is much prettier”.
Key words: “in their right mind”. She wasn’t. Thanks for your reply!
WOW - that is bad. Thanks for the reply.
Buddy of mine just finished his divorce. It cost them about $200 between them just for legal fees.
Uggh. Both men and women are not without their faults in the destruction of marriage, but that privileged, deviant attitude is just as foul and detrimental to holy matrimony as government sanctioned same sex unions.
Is that what God wants of humanity?
Some men are so stupid they would willingly marry the most beautiful, materialistic bitch just because she makes the perfect accessory to their wealthy lives, and they're shocked when she acts like a money-grubbing shrew!
Men, marry a woman for her character, not her looks. Is she concerned with pop culture trends, fashion, jewelry and all the cool places to go? Sure she may be a tigress in bed, but how many other guys has she banged before you?
Or does she stimulate your mind with good conversation, has conservative values, eschews material goods and cares about raising her own children? Marry that kind of woman and treat her as a husband should, not as an object that enhances your pride, but as a partner who shares your values. That kind of woman would be willing to be your own personal sexual goddess if you chose wisely.
You truly believe it is better to seek out multitudes of plastic whores, then to choose a modest-looking, honest, humble, yet devotedly sensual lover as a wife? Then it would be better to never marry, as Jesus said.
I know plain women get derided here on this site as the most unholy affront to femininity, but some of you men are so freaking shallow when it comes to picking spouses.
I wish that some parents would really think hard about how their actions affect kids.
My parents were married almost 25 yrs., and my dad asked my mom for a divorce on Christmas Eve, as we were getting ready to go to church.
Christmas was really, really bad that year. I think I was 11 or 12. It took decades before I could even come close to forgiving my dad. My mom still doesn’t. Tough situation.
My ex-wife milked the divorce for 23 years even though she remarried. Finally got her out of the house and had to split 50/50. I paid the mortgage, didn’t have the privilege of living there and had to force her sell.
