Sometimes I forget, because Gabe is just that Gabe. When I look at him I dont see Down syndrome, I see my son, Abis brother a sweet, willful, determined little boy.
Sometimes I forget, and that makes it even harder when someone reminds me in a not so kind way.
Like the cashier who gave me sad eyes and spit poison in a whisper, I bet you wish you had known before he came out. You know they have a test for that now
Shock, horror, hurt and fury coursed through my body. I considered jerking her over the register and beating her senseless. I looked her up and down; I could take her.
Instead I used wit. I smiled a crazy lady smile. I know right?! Its so much harder to get rid of them once they come out. Believe me Ive tried Jackpot! Her mouth dropped open, and she stared at me in shock.
I leaned over the register and whispered to her, What youre saying is that its OK for me to kill him while hes inside but not outside? In my book there isnt a difference. For the record, we knew everything about him during my pregnancy. Hes our son now, and he was our son then. There is no way in hell that I would let any harm come to either of my children, including during the time that theyre so ridiculously considered disposable. -
The medical community tried to get my friend to do tests on her youngest child because she was over 40. She refused and they got really nasty with her. She switched doc’s and hospitals. BTW, the boy was 100% fine. She told them that she and her husband would take the child in whatever condition God chose to send him in.
Some people can only have civility beaten into them. The cashier appears to be such a person.A fist to the side of the head would be a good learning experience for her.
I LIKE this Woman!
It would have been more to the point to say to the cashier, “I bet your mother wished she had aborted you, up to the very day when you left home for good.”
