Hellman’s does not own the word ‘mayonnaise’ so what’s their beef? Seems a little predatory to me. Yes, their mayo is very good, it’s also very pricey, and I’d bet Just Mayo is, too. For my money, Aldi’s Berman’s label mayo is just as tasty at half the price, $ 2/jar. And I’ve made mayo with an egg white, canola oil and the electric mixer, it ain’t rocket science...
For me, I’d have to see how the product “maintains” its integrity and consistency over time in the fridge. I hate a mayo that degrades to a loose viscous liquid.
Their beef is someone selling "mayo" that is not, in fact, mayonnaise.
Conservatives should realize that words mean things.
A number of common grocery products are covered by what's called a "standard-of-identity", as defined by the FDA.
To be called mayonnaise, a product must include certain specific ingredients in certain specific proportions. For example, Miracle Whip is a "salad dressing" rather than a "mayonnaise" because it is less than 50% vegetable oil by weight.
Hellman's may not own the term mayonnaise, but they are defending its standard-of-identity. Hellman's most definitely is mayonnaise, Just Mayo is not.
As a consumer, you have an interest in standards-of-identity -- they require a product to be what it says it is.
