Word For The Day, Monday, 11/10/14

;

In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of "Word for the Day".

hoyden; noun

1.

a boisterous, bold, and carefree girl; a tomboy. adjective:

1.

boisterous; rude. Also, hoiden .

Etymology:

At seven Juliet was an elfish creature… A hoyden who cuffed her duller witted brothers impartially and cursed her parents with shocking fluency.

-- William Faulkner, "Adolescence," Uncollected Stories of William Faulkner , edited by Joseph Blotner, 1979

Miss Matilda, a strapping hoyden of about fourteen, with a short frock and trousers, shrugged her shoulders and made a slight grimace, but took a candle and proceeded before me, up the back stairs…

-- Anne Brontë, Agnes Grey , 1847

Origin:

Hoyden is of uncertain origin, though etymologists suggest it may be linked to the Dutch term heiden meaning "heathen." It entered English in the late 1500s.

Rules: Everyone must leave a post using the Word for the Day in a sentence.
The sentence must, in some way, relate to the news of the day.

The Review threads are linked for your edification. ;-)

ARRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRGGGGGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!

So, I have been out of town since Sept 5 - was back one day just before October.

St Ronnie threatens me with doom and destruction tonight if I don’t finish the out-of-date (by only a little bit!) guacamole packet left in the fridge that expire 4 Nov.

Do you realize how few chips or dips or snack food are left int the house after 70 days of her buying food? ????

Ain’t NO chips fer the guac!

I hope you lived. Guac is bad enough when it’s new.

I’m leaving tomorrow morning and won’t be back until Saturday. Disaster ensues!
