no battery anymore (well...dying now)....any suggestions....tech guy says (after soldering once) that it is unrepairable.....trying to save files right now....help
Bane of most laptops, since the connector is inserted into the machine and it moves around.
Get a hard drive enclosure on Ebay for like 5 bucks and you can take your lappy apart and pull the drive and use the enclosure to get any files off that you want.
And my recommendation on your next lappy: A Mac Book Air. Good luck.
USB hard drive adapters are cheap. Get one.
Basically find another pc unit like yours, and put your current hard drive in. Should be good to go. If it’s old check local craigslist or go ebay.
Thanks....probably will do that.
Thanks
Thanks to you all! Free Republic is great...
I found a way to barely Charge the laptop again by finding it’s “Sweet Spot”....but I can tell the Sweet Spots are becoming few and far between...so your advice has been invaluable. (right now it’s sitting on it’s back with a book strategically located to push on the charge connection and it is working)
On the next one buy a 90 degree adapter for the plug end.
This was suggested to me by a tech.
I had the same thing happen with my Asus.
I was steady enough to solder a new plug the first time but, The second time it ended up in recycle minus the hard drive which I plugged into my desktop and retrieved every thing I needed then I formatted it and use it for back up storage.
$1100 down the drain. It lasted a month past warranty.
Yes, that’s it. No soldering. The jack is square even though it looks flat in that pic. The board Change takes a few hours. I refused to do it again and bought a new laptop. We held the cord like you are doing now just to get the data off.
Well...I’m lucky...this laptop is 3-4 years old....and this is the only real problem we’ve had with it...and, I bought it online. But, I think we will try something else...thinking about a Tablet, but only if we can hook it to a large monitor at times.
The power adapter repair route works too, but if a competent tech says the motherboard/adapter can't be reliably repaired, I'd trust him (or her). If you haven;t worked with solder before, don;t try the repair yourself, unless you are willing to risk the motherboard. My tech tells me he sees quite a few "ruined" boards, where he has to run wires to replace traces burned up by do it yourselfers.
They come in PATA and SATA style, you need to know which type of drive is in the laptop. The caddy that you linked to goes in a CD/DVD bay, and requires the computer be working (obviously, I hope). The external enclosure allows you to hook the hard drive to any computer that has a USB port. Short version, you won't lose any files just because you lose the motherboard.
I have 2 WD book drives that the case/port went bad and was wondering if there is a caddy that would work for them? I ripped one open but the oldest one I haven’t touched so far. They’re pretty old.
I would think so. As far as I know, all of those “book drives” are based on standard 2.5” or 3.5” hard drives. You have several choices with the drives. Install them directly in the usual place, put them in a new (external) case, or, for the 2.5” drives, buy the correct caddy and slip them into the CD/DVD slot on a laptop.
Thanks....may use that
