Whatever became of irradiated foods? Late 1950’s stuff.

It would keep forever with no refrigeration & contained zero residual radiation. No change in nutrients.

But people thought eating it would result in their conceiving Blinky the three eyed five legged boy, as the word `mutation’ was itself scary. So the idea died.

The FDA has approved irradiated food.

It was tried about 10-15 years ago, but the demand for it was low, so it died an economic death. There is a substantial investment in the equipment.

I think it is still used overseas and is used to sterilize medical instuments in this country.
