Dolly Parton Q&A: The Country Legend on 50 Years in Nashville and Why She Supports Her Gay Fans
http://www.billboard.com ^ | October 24, 2014 | Deborah Evans Price

This year marks the 50th Anniversary since 68-year-old international icon Dolly Parton came to Nashville. The fourth of 12 siblings who shared a one-room cabin, the East Tennessee native was so poor growing up that her father paid the doctor who delivered her with a bag of cornmeal. The day after her high school graduation, Parton left the Smoky Mountains for Music City, where she shepherded her career from singing on The Porter Wagoner Show, a syndicated music-variety series that aired from 1960 to 1981, to winning seven Grammys and scoring 25 No. 1 songs on Billboard's Hot Country Songs chart -- a record for a female artist.

On a recent fall afternoon at Nashville's NorthStar Studios, Parton is an animated conversationalist, throwing her head back and laughing often. In person, the legendary entertainer possesses a down-home, self-effacing charm -- disarming for someone who helms an empire that includes the Pigeon Forge, Tenn.-based Dollywood theme park, which annually hosts nearly 2.5 million visitors, and a valuable publishing catalog of such songs as "Jolene" and "I Will Always Love You," which she took to No. 1 long before Whitney Houston. In 2014 alone, Parton's 42nd studio album, Blue Smoke, debuted at No. 2 on Top Country Albums and No. 6 on the Billboard 200 -- marking her highest-charting solo album on the latter list -- and wrapped a successful world tour that included performing for 170,000 at the United Kingdom's Glastonbury Festival.

Well, we know what a cigarette is in England, short, “f-g”. That is so. It must be saying something like “I’m going out for a smoke” here in the US.

Jefferson drafted legislation against sodomy certainly.

i never said it didn’t mean what it means in this discussion. was just stating it was a word that described totally different, non-sexual things in the past.

i think you’re reading in what you think people mean.

“Something tells me if her mother were alive today Miss Plastic would be singing a different tune about homosexuals.”

Mothers do tend to have a bit of influence.

I’m saying that I hear too many who throw the word “faggot” around whenever homosexual issues come up. I’m not reading anything into it that isn’t there.

Name calling might make those posters feel better, but it’s painting all of us with a very bad brush. And making it harder to bring people into the party. There are conservative homosexuals who would vote with us but are driven away. We can’t afford to lose a single vote anymore.

regardless of words used, if one doesn’t agree with homosexuality, there’s no way to really bring them into the party if they want acceptance and celebration as homosexuals. if you don’t believe homosexuality is right, you stay true to your conscience and morals and don’t sell out that for political votes.

besides, homosexuals are hardly conservative. at best they are only fiscal conservatives. by definition they are all socially liberal. so we’re dealing with homosexual rinos, essentially. who needs to beg for more rinos?

gays are about 1% of the population. a tiny fraction of that 1% are fiscal conservatives, all by their lifestyle are socially liberal. to kowtow to such a small demographic is not rational.

Thanks.

It would be funny if the interviewer then mentioned ISIS cutting off heads of people in the Middle East. Dim-Bulb Dolly would say that’s terrible! The interviewer would say, who are you to judge? :-)

Law of politics #435: It is impossible for a homosexual to be a social conservative. It is almost as improbable for him to be any other kind of conservative.

Pigeon Forge is in an never ending battle with Gatlinburg to be the ugliest city in America.

I bet people didn’t judge their neighbors in Sodom and Gomorrah either.

You’ve got a good point.

gays are about 1% of the population.

And that 1% have families, co-workers and friends. That means people who know gays, who call them friend, cousin, neighbor, brother or sister, are far more than 1%. We can't afford to drive those people away with before they've even heard our message.

People who support gay rights are also more than 1% of the population. In the United States, they're more than 51% of the population. To ignore such a demographic is truly not rational.

Besides, we're better than that. Leave the childish namecalling to the liberals. Our strength is ideas, but nobody will hear those ideas if we preface them with slurs.

They call each other faggots, queers, dykes, etc. It’s a badge of honor for them. They do not call each other perverts or sodomites, so of course that’s the two terms I use to describe them. I will never use the word “gay”, unless it’s in the title of a thread and I can’t change it.

She has not a hit record in 20 years.

She's nearly 70 years old. One would not expect her to be storming the Billboard charts at her age. She did have 25 number one hits on the Country chart in her younger days and not many will ever catch up to that. Not even Garth Brooks.

for me it has noithing todo with name calling. i will not support immorality that casts itself to be good, and those against that immorality as evil. certainly not for votes.

Another ignorant twit that feels acceptance of deviants isn't a judgement.

Judgement is a two-edged sword, you can either accept or reject something, and whichever you chose is how you will be judged.

Christ said, Go and sin no more." He did not say "Go and be a good whore."

She’s an entertainer that has sold her soul for a dollar. End of story.
