NASA's Opportunity rover, a Mars exploration rover has been active for four years on Mars travelling fro a distance of more than 25 miles, captured images through its microscopic imager camera. A formation of a cross inside a circle was observed in the images.
According to a post on UFO Sightings Daily by Scott Waring, the photos, five in number, were captured on July 12 at 10.23 UTC with the photo ID Sol 3720. The source of the photos is the NASA site .
Scott Waring explained that the cross inside a circle was unusual and could possibly be three things. The objects that he felt this symbol, similar to a Celtic or Irish cross shape, could be are a fossil creature, a crystal formation and micro-technology.
Before the arrival of Christianity, the Celtic and Irish cross was widely used by the ancient people, reported UFO Sightings Hotspot . The four arms of the cross could denote either the four elements, the four directions of a compass or the four parts of man namely mind, body, soul and heart.
The ring around the cross carries many explanations including sun worship as well as symbolism. The ring was assumed to be symbolic as it created a shape that was aesthetically pleasing.
Scott Waring, on UFO Sightings Daily, explained that it could be a fossil of a micro creature but since there was a ring around the cross, it wasn't likely. He also wrote that the cross had a few similarities to a crystal formation but the ring caused him to rule that out as well.

For a look at the RAW photos, directly from the NASA site, there is this link:

The NASA site says it is from the "Microscopic Imager" so it is likely that the circle is too small to be a Rock Abrasion Tool (RAT) mark. However, I can find no references to scale.

That is what I was thinking. The area around it looks too flat to be natural, like something with the circle-cross pattern was pressed into the soil.

Ah, UFO Sightings Daily.

The last time I saw that movie, it was so nice to imagine them in that scene.

I think I know what this is now, seriously. I have been looking at the end effectors on the Curiosity Arm where the Microscopic Imaging Tool is mounted. This camera is made to "go in close" to view tiny, microscopic details.
So, the circle is WAY too small to be a RAT mark, however, I believe it is the IMPRESSION of a PHILLIPS HEAD SCREW, pressed into the soil when the robot was trying to move the arm end in close.
Take a look, and imagine what you would get if you pressed a flat, phillips head screw into the soil. Also imagine that it screwed into an enclosure, so a "ring" could form in the space between the screw head and the enclosure surface.
That is my reasoned opinion. It is an artifact produced by the rover itself, and if the cause is correct, we should be able to find "others" wherever the camera was pushed into a softer surface.

As a quick experiment, I put some baking soda in a shallow dish, and shook it a bit to randomize the surface. I then pressed a Phillips Head screw into it.
Here is another impression, with the screw that made it next to it:
As much as I would like this to be a "fossil", I really think it is not.

Don’t get me wrong. I’d love for there to be REAL evidence of extraterrestrial life.
Little grey aliens and Martians don’t meet any measure of serious scientific data that I would care to base my conclusions on.

Or the pattern left after using the RAT (Rock Abrasion Tool). That was my initial thought as well, but it begs the question, why don't we see that in a heck of a lot more of the images?
I'd be interested in the scale of the image.

Different types of rocks would be my guess. I haven’t gone through all of the photos the rovers have taken. Have you? Specifically the ones where the RAT was deployed...

The problem with the Phillips screw imprint in the nasa image is that it is not "quite" a perfect screw head imprint. So I began to look at tamper-proof Phillip screw images online. One thing led to another and I arrived at this photo of an Alpha particle X-ray spectrometer from a NASA rover. I think you will be impressed!
