I recall the format from around 2000, and I much prefer having pages.
All miltihundred replies on one page was.. Rough on the net connection.
The beta version of FR, which was introduced and discarded after a server meltdown, was colorful to say the least.
Some of the concepts introduced in the beta site were ported over.
And we enjoy them today.

I don't remember what year it was when I first clicked on a link to Free Republic, but it must have been a long time ago. I clearly remember the format looking a bit different than what we have today.

I wasn't a regular in those days, so my memory is kinda thin on that. I just remember it displayed differently than what we see now.
