In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of "Word for the Day".

obloquy \AH-bluh-kwee\ , noun
1. a strongly condemnatory utterance : abusive language
2. the condition of one that is discredited : bad repute

Example sentences:
The manager walked quickly back to the dugout as insults and obloquy rained down from the stands.

"Because of the stigma associated with drug convictions, such an indictment could be tantamount to a life sentence of obloquy in terms of future employment."
--Floral Park Dispatch, January 15, 2014

Etymology:
English speakers can choose from several synonyms to name a tongue-lashing. Abuse is a good general term that usually stresses the anger of the speaker and the harshness of the language, as in "scathing verbal abuse." Vituperation often specifies fluent, sustained abuse; "a torrent of vituperation" is a typical use of this term. Invective implies vehemence comparable to vituperation, but may suggest greater verbal and rhetorical skill; it may also apply especially to a public denunciation, as in "blistering political invective." Obloquy, which comes from the Late Latin ob- (meaning "against") plus loqui (meaning "to speak"), suggests defamation and consequent shame and disgrace; a typical example of its use would be "subjected to obloquy and derision."

The sentence must, in some way, relate to the news of the day. The Review threads are linked for your edification. ;-)

Hey January 15, 2014 was the 60th observance of the date I was born. But I can’t even spell obloquy.

Where are Pope Francis' defenders now? I see mostly obloquy.

I quit defending PopeF shortly after his election. PapaBen was suckered, I am disappointed in him. The world is scary enough without this new Pope causing sin. I have to study up on infallibility to know why I can't accept some of these coming changes.

I raised a ruckus in my church bible study last week, about how political correctness has NO PLACE in church teaching and sin should be called sin. There were dropped jaws all around but I finished my point. Love the sinner, hate the sin. A+ for you.

Remember, he is just a man, elected by people you did not elect to represent you.

The Pope is to represent God to us, not us to God. He is to be infallible...not everything he says or does, but he shouldn’t lead us unto sin.

In my Roman Catholic upbringing, through 12 years of Catholic school, we were taught he was infallible in ways of the church, not in all things period. Again, I see a lot of conflict with all previous RC church teaching and what he seems to espouse.

Amazing! Of course Firestone is just another greedy industrialist, like the Koch Bros, and we are not to pay any attention to them. Good knowledge comes only through socialism and marxism. major sarc/off
