Black Friday is supposedly the day after Thanksgiving. And that happens to be today. Whether or not Canadians had a black Friday thing after their Thanksgiving day last month I don't know. (Maybe I should ask FanFan.. ;-)
Anyway... Thanksgiving Day is (almost) an exclusive American holiday (ok - Canada was already mentioned but there's something similar in Grenada, Netherlands, Liberia, and the Aussies on Norfolk Island..)
But not in the UK. Since it seems those on your side of the pond don't have anything to be thankful for, why is it they have a black Friday over there??? ;-)
I realize that the Mail is closely akin to our National Inquirer, but none the less they report thusly...

Hey, that's over $100!
Americans invented Thanksgiving.
Canada has Thanksgiving on the 1st Monday of Oct., which makes sense since that is harvest time in most of Canada.
American Loyalists brought the tradition up to Canada after the war of 1812. Sorry about the old White House.
The UK does not celebrate Thanksgiving, although I think some are jealous of it. (I would be)
It’s only been in the last few years that we have had Black Friday.
Canada, and Britain have adopted the USA Black Friday, on the fourth Friday of Nov.
I am so sick the the words “Black Friday”, I could SCREAM, but that would be rude, so I won’t.
Robert, didn’t you know we have massive crock pots in Canada? Kids are so tough, and it takes time to tenderize.
It's funny to me, because I don't even remember the last time I turned my TV on.
There is yet more irony though, being that I bought it on a black Friday sale about 6 years ago.
Since it seems those on your side of the pond don't have anything to be thankful for, why is it they have a black Friday over there???
There is an ironic joke buried in that . :)

The only thing i can put this event down to is an attempt to increase turnover in the depressed market.
Empty out all of the old stock at reduced prices with a bit of a fanfair rather than just the usual 'Sales' that have now been going on since 2008.
Where better to look than the US when you need an idea for some razamataz to drum up sales? :)
Well you do all do it with such panache and it worked. :)
