You’re spamming again, NtI, and you’re making less and less sense. Go take a nap, already!

I’ll take one of Elon Musk’s cars but only if he doesn’t mind giving me one for $1400.

You mechanical peeps fire up the synapses and figure out how much I need to pay to make the thing run safely. I’m not surrendering the Seven right now; it doesn’t like cold weather.

And it’s still in the throes of title transfer, because I haven’t had a day to spare in the license office.

Well the big question is, did the car have its head gaskets replaced before or not? If so, and one has failed, the necessary repairs should be less costly.

If not, and this is the repair that should have occurred thirty thousand miles ago, something around fifteen hundred bucks would probably be a bargain.

I still think finding the right technician is a good beginning.

When someone has an idea of the bill ...

We could, for example, order parts and have them sent to Anoreth or her mechanic of choice.

There may be other things I will have to do in the meantime, but at least I have hopes of it being “better” soon.

(I have to charge my phone so I will be here for a while.)

While I was digging around in the tubs today, I found four boxes and two packets of Christmas cards. I believe that should be enough for the next four years or so, plus what I give locally.

All this talk of vehicles and repairs makes me grateful the repairs on mine haven’t been financially impossible. I thank the Lord every day for reliable wheels!

The head gaskets haven’t failed so if they have been replaced before (not sure) I won’t bother replacing them and I’ll do shocks and struts instead.

Well, a head gasket, or even two, and a belt, or even two, would run about a hundred dollars, or even two.

But first you have to know what parts you need.

You should have an expert opinion ...

... or even two.

If it costs more than my remaining balance on my car payment I’ll just trade it in. I like the XV Crosstrek (in orange) and the Foresters that are shaped like a brick.

I would be willing to bet that at 150k it still has its original head gaskets.. and that they are certainly on borrowed time. The '98-2001 or so definitely would go by that time - more usually closer to the 100k mark. Subaru made some changes somewhere in there - 2002 I think that supposedly made them last longer but they still failed.

My '98 blew through the gasket from the cylinder to the water jacket so the obvious issue was that it would overheat (combustion gasses collecting around the slug on the thermostat so that it could not sense temp properly and closed. And then since there was no coolant circulating, over heated - which then blew the bubble of gas and a lot of coolant out of the system and all seemed fine for a while.) Eventually it got to be an all the time issue, so I pulled the thermostat out, removed the guts and reinstalled the shell (there's an o-ring type thing on the thermo flange that you need to keep to maintain the seal on the housing.) That allowed me to drive it while I decided on what to do. Got prices in NY and got discouraged (along with at least three shops that said they wouldn't touch it.) Went to my tire place across the state line in Joisey and asked for his recommendation - his guy said 'Sure, I'll do it', pulled out his 'log' and quoted me what the last one he did was - and his price was at least $1200 less than what I found in NY.

Other symptoms are oily crud in coolant overflow tank, oil and or coolant leaks on outside of block.. I also would bet that you just might be 'wearing' the original timing belt if no gasket has been replaced yet. That might be the scary part since it is a dual-cam engine and if belt goes with engine running really bad thinks happen due to the laws of physics when a valve tries to occupy the same space as a piston. When that happens you have a BIG four cylinder, DOHC, horizontal opposed door stop and the car then is worth scrap value...

Asked my friend when his blew - he said 147k - his was 2002 but he had electrical issues (like a fire in the fuse box.. ;-) so there was no thought on his part about fixing it. His had the overheating issue but he's not mechanical so he never thought about 'modifying' the thermostat to allow him to drive it. If he had done so he probably would have been able to get a better deal on a replacement vehicle because it wouldn't have been an emergency.

What symptoms do you have that are making you think head gasket? Other than the current mileage which if it is original gaskets is a good enough reason to think replacement.
