Why is I. S. I. S. pronounced as isis, but U. S. A. is pronounced U S A?

Maybe because Isis is an actual word and it was easy to take its pronunciation for ISIS. Plus it works out better sound-wise than oosa (USA), ooser (USSR) or ook (UK).
