Actually I’ve heard ISIS pronounced as a single word & as each initial. SO, take your pick - either goes.

True. That's because ISIL includes the region known as Palestine which, oddly enough, includes Israel.

In essence, he is wiping Israel off the map.

Maybe because Isis is an actual word and it was easy to take its pronunciation for ISIS. Plus it works out better sound-wise than oosa (USA), ooser (USSR) or ook (UK).
