Gene’s makeup and demon schtick was the source of that. People took the theatre of it literally and went off bug nuts. Same for the whole Dungeons and Dragons thing. It was just another a way for Televangelist types to fleece the flock and build their powerbase.
Kiss was never sataninc. They were a rock band and nothing more.

Some of the most “satanic” bands out there have some of the firmest Christians in them.
Dave Mustaine of Megadeth was asked why he doesn’t do Christian rock. He said he doesn’t much care for Christian rock and prefers Christian actions to Christian words. Among his actions is his refusal to tour with openly anti Christian and satanic bands.
I sure wish I knew that then. I was a little kid when I heard all of the stories about them and they totally freaked me out. I always had fears that their grinning faces might come out of my closet at nighttime.
