Ebola Confirmed in America: Here’s What You Need To Do Right Now
SHTF Plan ^ | 9/30/14 | Daisy Luther

What You Need Right Now

Right now, before panic ensues, you need to ensure that you have everything you need to survive as though the world we know has ended. You need to be prepared to stay in your home for weeks, if not months. You need to be ready for a potential disruption of services.

Best case scenario: You get these supplies, the outbreak never occurs, and you can dole them out into your regular usage or stash them with your prepper stockpile while snickering at the crazy preppers.

It was in a post yesterday about self-decontaminating. I expect there to be a nation wide run on bleach by the end of the week...

Bleach will most certainly kill viruses ('viri'?). In my book ("When There is No FEMA") I also describe the storage of calcium hypochlorite to make bleach over the long term as needed (bleach itself has a limited shelf life). I also describe how to augment bleach to sanitize against MRSA, anthrax, etc.

So, I recommend researching these topics.

Homebrewers use iodophor sanitizers:

If the stores are out of bleach, look for a homebrew shop.

I haven’t been able to find out if iodine kills ebola. If you find a definitive answer I’d appreciate a ping or link.

Thanks Kart.

I topped off my pandemic stock this morning early by buying 90% alcohol, bleach and some nitrile gloves.

I'm ready to close the gates an hibernate if necessary.

SUMMARY

Following the introduction of Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) into Kinshasa a local hospital-based chain of infection developed which ended with the infection of a local nurse at the Ngaliema Hospital.

Thirty seven primary contacts of the latter patient were isolated in cohorts according to the last day of contact, and no further cases of EVD developed. ‘he surveillance teams which identified and traced these contacts also visited 174 secondary contacts and investigated a number of reports from Kinshasa and surrounding districts Of suspicious cases of illness or death, none of which were shown to be related to EVD.

Other containment measures included the use of disposable protective clothing together with respirators, viricidal disinfectants such as sodium hypochlorite and an iodophor, and careful disposal of excreta and other contaminated materials and equipment. Staff members involved in nursing and cleaning duties were instructed in the correct procedures to prevent auto- and cross infection.

Thanks!

That’s very useful.

I wonder if actually taking iodine would be somewhat prophylactic. I take 25mg a day as it is.

I found the alcohol you mentioned, today at WallyWorld. I bought all they had, which was only 6 bottles.

I made my own disinfectant wipes with some of it. Took an almost used roll of paper towels, cut in half, removed the core, flattened them and soaked with a bit of the alcohol - then put them in a baggie.

Calcium Hypochlorite is pool shock. You need to store it safely, because it will corrode everything surrounding it. I use canning jars, plastic lids (also amazon) and then Duct Tape around the lid to glass. Hope that helps.

You may also want to investigate Survival Blog for the different recipes. You will need 10% bleach. A pool test kit may also come in handy.

I don’t mean to rain on the panic party here, but in the 3rd world countries where Ebola has spread, most everyone is STILL alive.

The calculation of death ratio is based on current infections. In an expanding pandemic, the number of deaths will always be inaccurate. The number of infected are rising dramatically, but many are still sick and alive. When the rate of infection or RO is zero, then the true ratio will come out.

According to Doctors Without Boarders (with their treatment) the mortality is 70%. That will change as their role goes from treatment to isolation of the infected to reduce the rate of transmission.
