I caught guitar prodigy, Quinn Sullivan, this weekend at the Eastern States Exhibition. I saw him perform the extended version of his new single. I was able to speak to him briefly after the show and get a CD signed.

I did know Frank, but not well. Showed him around Milwaukee for a few days. Had a lot of laughs! Took him to a club and the owner asked Frank to do a introduction lineup for the patrons. One young cutie came up to me and asked, “Is that really Mr. Zeppelin?” I was doing the introductions to Frank, so I took her over and said “Donna, this is Mr. Zeppelin.” Frank politely took it in stride, but his bodyguard John, had to turn around and stuff his fist in his mouth. He was laughing so hard he was shaking all over. John and I called Frank “Mr. Zeppelin” for the next three days. Laughed our butts off! I took them to Mader’s traditional German restaurant for dinner. At that time, Mader’s had a trio of old German ladies playing pre WWll Classical German music from a balcony. Frank was stunned! I never paid for one of his concerts again. Gail or someone would call and say there were stage passes waiting for me at the venue.
I am a retired musician. If you go back to my earlier post, there are two songs that I played on with Neil. I played pedal steel on”Every Thought Of You” and lap steel on “Fargo.”

Kid’s good. Saw him at a few venues in MA when he was a tyke. Bu he is far removed from SRV. Same genre....but he’s not a blues purist....hearing other things....different approaches.
But SRV had something much more which very very few players ever....of any style... have: musical authority. I think if the kid was prone to be that authoritative. ...he’d have developed it a long time ago. Comparatively ‘low voltage’ by comparison to SRV. IMHO.
Authority? George Benson. Tom Emmanuel. Fred King. Wes. Jimi. Steve Ray. And a bunch of new kids I’ve heard...but don’t know their names. Three notes in to the first solo you ever hear them play....you know they’re special.
What I’m saying is that this kid is good...but isn’t endowed with the gift. Don’t think it’s something you can exercise into being. This late in his game..it’d be there if he did have ‘it’
PS...yeah....his sound is Vintage. Santana.....and his hands aren’t strong. And he’s doing a lot of hunt and peck without musical authority.

Agree. Though I love Carlos, he does the redundant licks thing. He does have a touch of Zappa’s innovation too. This particular jam, though played well, is very garage. And he needs to play the fills between vocal lines to keep the song interesting.
He’s unique and has potential for greatness as a guitar player but his vocals are less than inspiring, they probably will improve with time.
All in all, he’s SO much better than I could even imagine performing myself.

Actually that’s one of the things I love about Carlos’ playing. A lot of times when he plays a lick several times in a row he puts a slightly different emphasis, tone and harmonics on each one, so it’s the same but it’s not. He makes the guitar “talk”, as they say. One of his signatures, along with using 2nd and 6th notes of the chord he’s playing against as passing tones in his solos. Carlos has played with a lot of different artists, but you always know it’s him right away.

And shows that it ain’t what you play...it’s how you play olay....limited as yer bag may be. SRV had a very limited vocabulary. But he played from the primitive brain stem...not the frontal lobe. And it moved the listener in the same primitive place. Authority. This kid Owen is there....a confident warrior.

I think he needs a big dose of Albert King to sound more like SRV - and I’m not saying he should. He clearly has a gift and the ability to express his instincts on guitar. Hat’s off to him!
Hey. I always like interacting with you. A FReeper that really knows who Zappa was. I followed him from Freakout and the 60s on so I know quite a lot about him - at least as much as one can learn as a listener.
Just because he didn’t do drugs doesn’t mean he couldn’t be an asshole. But that wasn’t my complaint as I didn’t have to work with him. :-) My only beef with him was his anti-christian tirades and degrading lyrics. Loved his music though.
He was a driven composer and that is ALL he did. One of the few composers I can say was at genius level. I dare anyone to perform the Black Page. But I can’t play any of his stuff in front of my family because of the lyrics.
Vinny gets the prize for not only performing his ridiculous pieces of music accurately on the drums but doing it while turning a page with one hand, grabbing some food to eat and doing all this without missing a beat. Even Zappa threw his music on the floor laughing at the scene. Bozzio left the room in disgust. ha ha ha
I especially liked the Live at Roxy band and period. I think that is when he really blossomed although one could argue the blossoming started happening in the 60s and he just kept going and going. Sad loss of a great talent

Glad someone enjoyed it. I really enjoyed seeing him live. Glad to see a kid taking up blues guitar. I can't take any more processed music.

Yeah. I probably shouldn't have compared him, but I don't know as much about music as most people here. But I haven't enjoyed a blues guitarist as much since Stevie. I'm hoping for a bright future for this kid.
As you can guess, I tend to go more for guitar histrionics, but he is good.
Quinn takes his turn at the four-minute mark. Look at the expression on Johnny's face. I eat this stuff up. It looks like Johnny does, too.
