I’ve spent some time in Durango, and was fond of it. Good weather variety, pretty sights, and if you want a weekend in Switzerland, Ouray is right up the road. They voted for Obama (not by much) but also voted for Bush. Their Congressman’s a Republican.

Ouray is one of the most beautiful parts of the state. It certainly deserves the “Little Switzerland” moniker. Even more fun is the road out of Ouray, to the west, over Imogene Pass (14,000+ feet elevation @ the summit) and then down into Telluride. A drive from semi-arid high desert, through sub-alpine flora and through almost 200 years of mining history. Of course, 4x4 is a must, but well worth it. It don’t get better.
