Dangerous Elegance: A History of High-Heeled Shoes
Random History ^ | April 9, 2008 | Random History and Word origins for the Curious Mind

The high-heeled shoe, or a shoe whose heel is higher than the toe, is a matter of contentious and heated discussion. Shoes in general have typically served as markers of gender, class, race, and ethnicity--and both the foot and the shoe have been imbued with powerful phallic and fertility symbols as evidenced in the contemporary practice of tying shoes to a newlywed couple’s car. No other shoe, however, has gestured toward leisure, sexuality, and sophistication as much as the high-heeled shoe. Fraught with contradiction, heels paradoxically inhibit movement in order to increase it, at least in appearance. Standing in heels, a woman presents herself already half-walking while at the same time reducing the length of her step, fostering the illusion of speed while suggesting the promise of an imminent fall. The higher and more unstable the heel, the more clearly these contradictions are expressed (Kunzle 2004). Doctors and scholars alike have argued about the physical and cultural effect, both positive and negative, that heels have had not only on women, but on society as a whole.

When I was pg my hubby forbid me to wear any shoe that was a flipflop or had a heel higher than 1”.

(he was afraid I’d fall)

One of the first things I did after my first was make sure all my heels fit.

They did.

Is that from heels? I thought feet like that were from wearing shoes that were too small.

I wore 4 or 5” heels for years and my feet do NOT look like that. I did always wear the correct size though.

Well, I meant any ball returned over the net in her direction. No way was it getting to back court.

I don’t care about feet, but I do like the way heels present the female form in total.

Ok, I can see that. Especially if the too small shoes were high heels making a bad thing even worse.

Yes, but being 6ft2in implies a very large size and XWide XXWide shoes that must be very difficult to find for fashion purposes other than athletic.

Agreed with you chode.

Though I don’t wear high heel shoes because I am already plenty tall and to wear heels any taller and I start hitting my head on doorways. If I do wear heels they are on western boots or outdoor type shoes. But that is also part of the farm upbringing in me.

When I see impractical shoes I shake my head and say a prayer for the schlub that has to support that shoe habit.

[ We have a young lady in our congregation who is 6’ 2” tall. Her mom is almost that tall. I am 6’ 1” and she and I look eye to eye with me wearing “go to church” shoes and she wears flat bottom shoes. She could be a model for any beauty magazine. ]

Sounds like my family...

I love strong, beautiful feet that are functional. I despise things like Chinese foot binding, which makes “no sense” to people today, though currently in our culture many women are doing the nigh identical.

A small heel with a toe box that doesn’t deform is feminine and pretty. Marilyn Monroe didn’t wear four inchers. Sexy are ballet flats, many pretty flat sandals, and -— clean, pedicured, bare feet.

Right now we have famous people in four inch bone deforming (up the foot, leg, and SPINE) high heels traipsing like cows walking downhill on every stage. These shoes in my mind take women back to early Chinese culture. FOR WHAT EXACTLY are we women literally shackling ourselves? Where is the “empowerment” in being unable to move freely like men can, or to walk comfortably? Any women doing so are lying to themselves. No human being on a desert island seeking foot protection or even adornment would choose such monstrosities. You are shackled sheep. Be brave and buck this misogynist (probably thought of by gay men) trend.

Stepping off my shoebox in sparkly silver flip flops.

Hmm I can probably count on two hands the amount of times I have worn high heels in my lifetime (I’m a casual, jeans and flats type)however I have one of those “ugly” bunions. It’s genetic. Not related to the type of shoe one wears I don’t believe. I’ve had one since my 20’s. It’s never cause me discomfort until recently:(

Actually, this young lady has normal sized feet. Probably a size 7 or 8 and not wider than any other woman and weighs under 125.
