Earlier this year, Facebook approved a new policy that allowed a broader range of gender identifications to be used on social profiles. The policy change, instead of just asking users to choose from male and female, offered 50 other options, including other and specific transgender identifications. The move was a resounding sign of acceptance from Facebook, but according to a report from Tech Times, the company may have just taken a step back.
This week, on September 10, many performers were automatically logged out of their Facebook profiles and had their accounts suspended. Facebook said that the move was made to enforce its policy that users are only allowed to use their real, legal names on personal profiles.

Like Cisalpine Gaul and Transalpine Gaul.
Cis? What is that?
You left ot Sharktopus.
I get confused. If you are “transgender female”, does that mean you are currently a female or previously a female?
Looked the silly notion up.
Seems that a cis person is one whose “individual experience of their own gender matches the sex they were assigned at birth.”
Note the weasel wording. A baby isn’t born a girl. She has gender identity as a girl assigned to her, apparently randomly and certainly not legitimately.
Good observation. When it says “they were assigned” their sex (are we all committees now?) at birth, it’s saying that sex isn’t a biological reality. Of course, one has to say that if one is going to claim that sex can change.
The world gets ever weirder.
“Sexual orientation,” who you like to get jiggy with, in inborn and unchangeable. It is considered hate speech to even suggest this is not the case.
Meanwhile, sex, which is determined by DNA in every cell of the body, is subject to change without notice. It is considered hate speech to even suggest this is not the case.
What one enjoys, or what might in the past have been considered an opinion, is the ultimate reality.
Actual physical reality is now only an opinion.
Whatever happened to..”Not sure”? Must be sexist to say that.
All opinions are equal ... except the opinion that there is an observable reality that does not vary upon anyone’s whim. Believing that is “mean,” and mean people must be eradicated.
Not entirely. “Sexual orientation” is considered an observable reality that does not vary upon someone’s whim.
That’s the contradiction that floors me.
Well, that's true. When you have a person whose behavior changes - Anne Heche, for example - the official version is that the person didn't "really" know his or her "real" sexual orientation. It's rather like the disputes among some Christians over whether some individual is "really" saved.
Should note that “sexual orientation” can change, in their worldview, but only in one direction.
That’s what the whole bit about “coming out” is about. A man in his 50s who’s been heterosexual his whole life and suddenly decides he’s gay is merely recognizing the reality that had existed all along.
A man in his 50s who’s been homosexual his whole life and suddenly decides he’s straight is mistaken, and probably misled by Christianists. He must be saved from himself.
This is similar to the Brezhnev Doctrine and Muslim ideas about land. Ownership can change, but only in one direction.
No True Scotsman, IOW.
Well-put.
His name was Wonko the Sane. A great man.
This is blatant discrimination! Who the hell uses their REAL name on facebook, anyway?
I had no idea that there are more genders than Baskins Robbins’ ice cream flavors. My public school education has completely failed me.
