Sure sounds like it. An X-Class flare aimed right at us is fairly unusual. Might even fry a few things in northern latitudes, has before. If it looks that bad and they see it coming with more than a day’s warning, I’ve often though an intentional grid-down in threatened areas and strategic disconnect of certain electrical and electronic components would spare a lot of damage and expense. Some here would dispute that this would have any value.
Actually a good topic of discussion - outside of a faraday cage what other reduction techniques are available to reduce if not eliminate the impact? I mean we have a couple of days to try to take some steps.
Given the interconnectedness of the electrical grid I believe this may have the potential to cause more widespread problems.
