The best Ripper film was the "The Lodger", made in the forties starring the brilliant Laird Cregar as the lodger, the suave George Sanders as the detective, and Merle Oberon as the feminine lead.

The suspense build-up was more than chilling.....and there was all the right amount of gas-lit London cobblestone streets and, of course, fog, plenty of fog.

The filmakers had the killer wrong, but they made the movie right. I still remember it vividly....and you're right....they don't make 'em like this anymore.

There was never anyone else like George Sanders. Suave, yes, but creepy suave. His roles were always memorable.
